Good iPhone app to monitor trans temp?

I've got a 97 and there is a red light on the dash that that says A/T Oil Temp. I've only seen it come on when before I start the car with the ignition in the on position. Don't know if it is hooked up to a sensor but the light is there.

If there is a light then there is a sensor. I thought there was on but my wife drives the runner.
 
Well, it works. This was on my drive to work this morning.

That's awesome, first person I've seen pull this off with an Iphone! I wonder if you could use a wifi adapter instead though so I wouldn't have to jailbreak my phone? I'm not sure why I wouldn't just jailbreak it at this point, but I'm asking the question anyways.

What else does that software do? Scan & clear OBD2 codes? Can you datalog? I've never heard of "engine link".

It should work just fine with the wifi adapter. I just took the Bluetooth route because I didn't want to disconnect my phone's data connection when it connected to the wifi adapter.

It pretty much displays reported engine parameters like MAF flow rates, coolant temp, vehicle speed, etc. It does report and clear trouble codes. As far as I can tell, it doesn't data log.
 
How is the latency? My setup (wifi) is practically unusable the latency is so bad, maybe 10 sec +/-. I might be inclined to pick up a BT adapter now since I've recently jail broke my phone anyways. Would be curious to see if the wifi is the issue vs BT.

Care to share the pid info/process? I too have engine link but I pretty much shelved due to the latency issue.

If I had to guess, I think you have a bad wifi-to-OBD adapter, and that is causing you problems. My adapter doesn't get hot. I have no idea if it stays on when the key is "OFF". I drive the 4Runner as my daily driver, and it hasn't drained the battery. There's a slight lag in the latency, but nothing terrible.

As far as the custom PID information, this is what I used:

Header:0
ModeAndPID: 01b4
Formula: A*(9/5)-38
Min: 0
Max: 350
Unit: °F
Description: TFT (you can call this whatever you want)

I had not considered it dropping data when connected to a wifi adapter, that's a really good point. It looks like ios 7.0.4 is jailbroken untethered already, so maybe I'll look into that and finally have a jailbroken iphone.

Just went thru the JB process the first time myself. Easy peezy. Just make sure if your last iOS update was over the air, then do a full back up to iTunes, restore from iTunes and then JB. Also disable passwords for phone and SIM card.

I'm definitely gonna get the BT adapter even though losing wifi data is ok for me cuz if I'm driving I'm not gonna be on wifi anyways. Wondering if my wifi adapter is defective or if the technology itself is crippled.

Also I just got an ipad mini and a ram mount for it, I could display a crapload of gauges on it lol

This is veering off topic, but hopefully still relevant to the conversation:

Why do I NEED to use Itunes to backup and restore? What does it do that the cloud doesn't? I HATE Itunes, despite being on my 3rd iphone, I've only used it a handful of times, and it usually F's up my phone when I have used it. Is there something specific to jailbreaking that requires you to use it?
 
Apparently there's an issue in the JB process where the phone won't boot up properly, gets stuck in a loop. But only with a previously ota updated os. Restoring fr iTunes before JB resolves the issue.

There is some inherent risk in JB, if you are not able to do a full restore, I wouldn't recommend goin down that road.

Keep in mind that if using the WiFi-OBD2 adapter, your phone will also not be able to use its 3G or 4G connection. Being connected to the wifi adapter, the phone will be looking for an Internet connection there, which obviously that OBD adapter won't be providing.

I like an Internet connection so I can listen to Pandora or ESPN Radio while driving.

I was not aware of that limitation. Thanks Robb. All the more reason to go BT route.

The write up is geared towards 3rd gen 4Runners. Although I believe the 4th gen information has already been posted in this thread.
