very mild off road and extreme spelunking in one day...

This past weekend, I went spelunking with a group, and in order to get there, we did some mild off roading with a Toyota 4Runner and a Chevy 15 passenger 'Express' van.

With open diffs, the van did have some difficulty in one area, but otherwise, the road was too easy for the 4Runner. :D

Beautiful stuff. Caves are always fun. I've been too a few caves in Oklahoma and Missouri (most popular being Meramec Caverns) but none of those required spelunking. Wyoming is a beautiful state. A friend of mine is actually doing a stint in Wyoming with NOLS, in the wind river range I think.

NOLS has a base in Lander, Wyoming, in the heart of Wind River range country, I believe. As for the cave, it was a tight one!

An LA Times article about the cave, published in 1993 makes for an interesting read: Wyoming's Horsethief Cave Puts Spelunkers in a Real Squeeze : Cavern: The Interior Department's first underground recreation trail offers 12 miles of subterranean adventure. - Los Angeles Times
 
Geez. A 15 inch squeeze. I'd do it but I sure as heck wouldn't be happy about it! I much prefer traveling the other way. All the ground below my feet (mountain peaks) rather than it all over my head!

Yup, tight for sure! We took 8 people through it, and we all went through Denise's Crawl, 15 inches was tight! We would enter a room in the cave, our leader would be like "Okay, guess where we're going next!" and it would always be some small hole on the floor. Crazy.

I relate, I do prefer the mountain peaks above me than below me. :)
 
I like that ARB bumper too and am looking forward to my own!

and I miss all the spelunking I did growing up in south central Missouri

Went and did some mild off road today with the brothers and my dog - had a lot of fun with the lighting, the cooler temps, and the changing colors...

Adventures...

This week, I took a 450+ mile trip to help volunteer to build fence on some rural ranches after the severe forest fires that swept through the area earlier this summer. I drove on all kinds of terrain, from dirt roads to USFS roads to highways to the interstate, had a lot of fun. I also got my new Ultragauge, so I was able to "break" it in - love the instant MPGs!

Pictures of just the general area and of very light wheeling. Pics of 4Runners is what counts!

If you look closely, you can see a man in a light blue denim shirt for scale. The fence goes through there, over some small drainages, and up and over the hill again. Hard work!

I found this really cool US Forest Service Fire Lookout Tower built in 1958, 53' tall... I thought it was pretty neat and it was fun to pose the 4Runner with it. :)

Elk hunting trip #2

Went elk hunting again in early January. No elk for me this trip either...

The 4Runner covered 380 miles in 5 days, only 170 on the pavement, and 210 miles on rock/dirt. Everything still seems to be together, for the most part! My subwoofer doesn't work - something got shaken apart, will have to look around more.

The Rig also rolled over 105K on the way up...
