Weird headlight issue! Help

Hey guys I've recently noticed some issues with my 4runners (drl equipped) headlights. Here are the symptoms: driving lights work, lows do do not, highs will flash when the stick is pulled back, but will not stay on when pushed forward into the on position. Also all the exterior and interior work when the rotary part of the switch it turned on. I've double checked all fuses and relays and the bulb themself. The only thing I can think of left is the switch itself but would like a second opinion befor ordering a high priced new one. Has anyone else experienced any issues like this? Any help is appreciated.

I would do this. On the DRL main relay, the high low signal from the switch is a ground that switches between pins 7 and 8. Use a test light or DMM to see if this happens. If it doesn't, it pretty much has to be the switch. I suspect it is.

How did you check the DRL main relay (D8)? That's the next suspect, and checking that is a non-trivial exercise...and you really CAN't check it, unless the switch, IS in fact, working. So, if you did check it, you would already know whether the switch is working.

Oh, welcome to the forum!

I should have specified. I check all the easily accessible relay(s) under the hood a little while ago when the problem first came up. The DRL relay is located to the right of the steering column inside the car right? is there anything else that could be faulty in this location aswell?

Honestly, I don't know--I'm just going by the circuit diagram. I don't have DRL's on my '99.

Relay locations:

Other components locations

After a quick look, yes main relay is by the column. There is a diode for the DRL under there but I don't think it could cause your condition.

Well, between yesterday and today the taco site took down their on-line FSM and Wiring manuals that I have been linking to ever since ncttora took theirs down. So now I will attempt to post attachments:

Cool. I can see them. Can somebody out there confirm that others can see them? Thanks.

Or does anybody know an on-line source that still works? I fear Toyota killed them all. Even the wayback site got cleaned out.

Yup I can see them. Thanks again
