Rock Toy Industries 3rd gen 3.4 Turbo Build
We will be using this thread to document our upcoming turbo build on our 97 4Runner shop rig. You may know it as the Rock Lobster.
We have been running our 87 3.4 Turbo truck for almost a year now and decided to expand and build one for the Rock Lobster. The plan is to use this to prototype a complete kit for the 3.4 while using all USA made high quality components instead of the cheaper eBay kits that are available and still compete with a new TRD supercharger kit.
Here is the 87 with a 3.4 swap and our turbo setup.
The components on this build will consist of:
Holset HX35 turbo
URD Fuel/timing calibrator
315cc Supra injectors
RTI custom built manifolds and exhaust
Intercooler, piping, silicone couplers, and clamps from FrozenBoost.com
Greddy BOV.
This will run with the factory airbox to keep water out of the intake and we are going to try and keep all A/C, Power steering, and coolant lines routed like factory. We may swap to a 3.0 radiator as they are narrower.
Wastegate will be set to about 7-8psi of boost. Nothing too crazy.
This is what we are starting with. The supercharger has already been sold
The Turbo we will be using
As of now, all parts have been ordered and we are waiting for arrival. Once everything is in hand, the fun begins!
Stay tuned!

You will need mad fuel upgrades or forged pistons and head work. The stock pistons lose their balls around 15 psi. Head work mostly removing metal from the combustion chamber. Might be able to get buy with a super thick copper head gasket. Urd 6 additional injectors on top of 550s on the intake. Though all that is to make best of the beast. So just watch out for turbo creep if the wastegate decides to not be nice.
These turbos are sensitive to oil drain back the fatter the better.
I have been planning the same build for quite a while. I got a hx35w from a yacht.

From your pic, it looks like you're going with a front mount turbo (as opposed to a low mount, or rear mount). Are you using custom exhaust manifolds then?

Why? He's limiting boost to 7-8psi...

I also said
"Though all that is to make the best of the beast"
Cummins bt4 engine used in everything from generators to trucks. Dont know exactly what it came off of but mine is from a off highway (not in a truck) engine and considering I got it from a guy that works at a boat yard im assuming its from a yacht. I got a picture of it floating around t4r somewhere of the turbo.

This is going to stay fairly mild with boost. As of now, the Lobster is running 7psi from the supercharger with no additional fuel and maintains 12:1 all the way to redline under full throttle. The 315cc injectors and the URD computer should make for a pretty solid setup once we get it tuned.
The 87 3.4 has been daily driven and beat on for the past year at 10psi with spikes to 12-15psi. These 3.4's are pretty damn tough.

Yep will be mounted in the engine bay. Going to try and keep the amount of charge pipe to a minimum. We will be building the manifolds like we did for the 87 3.4 truck.

Want this. Been following a couple 3.4 turbo builds with CXRacing manifolds but I'd rather not be the one who figures out they're garbage. I remember seeing the 87 at the Toytec meet last fall and it looked pretty nice.

After I went back and re-read your orginal post, I see where you mentioned building your own manifolds.
You planning on any kind of water/meth injection?
