Yeah good thread, im sub'd.
Besides the huge photos at the end, I switched viewing thread as a printable version, worked well.

I have similar plan as you, weekend trips with RTT.
Need to stiffen out and lift my saggy runner.
Thanks for all the input, trial and error you did so hopefully I wont.

:cheers

Thanks. Yeah I'm not sure why they are so big. Maybe I can figure out how to make them scale down. I don't find the OME 891 to be stiff at all, and they definitely sag with about 200 pounds on it

Thanks
This is Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) in South Texas, between Corpus Christi and Mexico. It's a great place to get away. The North island (North Padre, or PINS) is 60 miles long, well from the entrance to the beach. The first 5-10 miles are usually busier, the rest is pretty desolate. At the end of the island is usually busy as well, it has great fishing and the way the island is shaped bring fish into it's crystal clear water. Lots of sharks there too...
Other than at the ends its very private. The only concern is with Coyotes, both 2 and 4 legged variety.

Nice pick up for $3500. A 4R with a locker can easily go for 5G's. The color looks great in the pics but I know what rattle cans look like close up. LOL
I rattle canned the hood of my old Accord but ended up sanding it again & spraying it with real auto paint. ($55 for a pint) Came out great.
Nice dogs too, me & my girl + 2 dogs.

Great write up. I think everyone should document their truck transformations. I enjoyed reading it. Good job.

Actually, the paint looks really good. No one knows it rattle can until I tell them. I sanded between coats, which seemed to help a lot. The only area that looks bad are the fenders, which I just painted to keep them from being green and the roof, which I really just lost interest in painting since its on the roof. Overall, I'm very happy with it. If I do repaint it, I may just take it to econopaint or something like that.

Nice build, great photos. I'm going to Plasti Dip my bumpers and lower trim when I replace the damaged front bumper.

New wheels

So after deliberating back and forth with the wife about which wheels to get, I decided on the Konig Countersteer Type X from FN wheels. They have a 4.1" backspace, vs the 4.84" backspace on the FJ wheels. I had initially thought the FJ wheels were maybe bent, but there were issues with one tire and another tire wasn't mounted squarely on the bead. I ordered these and got the tires fixed, which fixed the problem. I chose the Countersteers because they are 17x8, have a "low" backspace and they are crazy light.
The new wheels

I went to another, different Discount Tire after dealing with my local one and not getting what I want most of the time. I have personally serviced their Hunter balancers, and I know this shop takes good care of their equipment and calibrated them.

I also put new lift gate struts in the back and also put the TDI floor mats in. They turned out pretty good, the rear are great, fronts are OK fitment. Better than the carpet parts that were in there.

I also put a new fuel filter in, after having some prolonged cranking to start. As far as I could tell it was factory. Holographic Toyota sticker with a barcode. It was pretty nasty, but easy to do.

Also ordered some All-Pro Rocksliders. I like that they stick out farther than most of the other ones I've seen. That should make it easier to mess with the tent. No idea how long they take to make and get here, but hopefully not long. Plotting my first big trip....

Painted flares

Today I had some free time and decided to work on the fender flares and paint them black. I thought the all tan was a bit much and I like the 2-tone tan and black look. When I started it was nice out, but of course, like all my painting projects it didn't last long. It dropped about 10 degrees while I was painting, with a nice stiff north wind. Checked the forecast and no predicted cold front this morning. Oh well.

Went ahead and did the rockers too since they were getting marked up by me getting in and out.

Fixing the center stack and new radio

I had the 4Runner at Discount Tire again to get the tires balanced. I seem very having a major issue with something. I can not seem to get these F'n tires to balance, or there is some other issue causing vibrations. I've already addressed everything I can think of that could cause vibrations. I had them put the clamps on weights outside the lips, even though the guy said they will scratch. I care more about function over form and will not tolerate vibrations. It's significantly improved vs the sticker weights, as I figured the case would be. Static Balance is hard to do on truck tires reliably.

Anyway, while I was waiting for the balance I wandered over to Best Buy to see about upgrading the radio. The stock H/U sucks and I would like to have Bluetooth. I was able to pick up a nice Pioneer touchscreen unit with a Metra wiring Harness and some Pioneer 6.5" Speakers for the front doors for a hair under $300. Both the radio and speakers were open box items and looked unused. I experienced no issues during install, except the park brake sensor has to be installed to do basically anything on the pioneer unit.

I also used this time to replace my Center stack plastic with a black one, I'm not a big fan of the fake wood. Plus the limited fake wood is the thinnest cheapest plastic I've ever felt. It literally disintegrated in my hands. I got a black one from the junkyard and painted my middle section of plastic to match.

Crap "wood trim" that just fell apart

New radio, trying out the DVD function. Works great.

I'm really impressed by the performance of the head unit. It's the Pioneer AVH-X3800BS and I used the Metra 70-1761. At Best buy the computer pulled up several numbers for the harness. This one connects the 2 separate wire sets to the one radio connection. I have the factory amp that I removed.

My All-Pro Sliders should ship today so next week I'll be putting them on, I'm excited about that.

I have that same Pioneer in my Ram and love it. Will probably put one in my 4Runner. I have had it for about a year and still find some new features on it. As far as the park sensor, go on Amazon and order a relay. Cost about 12.00 and fools the unit into thinking the park brake is set to activate all of the features. Just don't watch a movie going down the road!

I also like the removed running boards. Would like to get around to doing this on my rig.
