Lost my spare tire crank tool

I just realized I can't find the metal crank tool to lower the spare tire.

Local dealer price is $43.95 and needs to be ordered.

Any suggestions on some tools I can use to lower the spare or where I can find one for cheaper?

You can probably just make one ourself couldn't you? Just bend a metal bar and square off the end?

Ugh this reminds me I left my spare tire tool in the parking lot at Rausch Creek.. If you figure out what alternative works, let us know.

That's what I did. I've never used the OEM tool or jack. Check the link in my signature.

A 2' long 3/8" inch extension and a ratchet works like a charm.

Why would you bend it? my spare tire is a straight shot through the rear bumper. Unless you're talking about making the hook end for the jack but if you don't have a jack then that would be pointless. Not sure if original poster has the jack or not.

Not for the jack, for torquing the thing. If you are using a 3/8 extension, then you can just put the pocket wrench on it, but you need a way to turn it if it just a bar with a squared off end.

I think he means bending into the handcrank shape like the original. Then no wrench is needed. Could be done with the right bar stock.

EDIT--I see he already responded. OOPS.

5th wheel puller works.

I had the same problem. I had an old 5th wheel puller that worked to lower the spare. It's the kind sold at truck stops with an 'L' shape on the end. It will work better after I modify the end to fit better. I will cut off about one half inch on the end and grind the end so it is a little thinner. However, it did fit just enough to work without modification.
