you CAN change the color of your clock
Hey guys so I was going to wait until i did it to post this thread but im having trouble finding the supplies.
So i found this video in how they changed the green to a white by using a blue and red film over the digital green display. It looks pretty simple I just have no clue where to find the colored film paper. I went to a local craft store and no luck so far...
but here is the video it's towards the end when they do that it also shows a way that may get rid of some hotspots in the LED's pretty good stuff!
YouTube - Mustang Gauge LED Upgrade Part II
The only thing i can find are some organizers that are red and somewhat blue that kind of make a purple but not really to my liking.
I read somewhere of someone cutting out a piece from a Kaboom cleaner bottle so i may try that route too?? i dont know what do yall think?

I had heard that trick too of using a piece from a bottle of Kaboom to put in your clock face to change the color.
I am going to have my dash apart here in the next few weeks so might give it a try and post up a pic if it comes out OK.The idea of using some type of colored film sounds alot easier though !

you might want to try a hobby store (radio control) the have different color films that we use to cover balsa wood planes. i have seen them translucent and i think they would fit the bill. any hobby shop should have a fairly good selection of colors since this material is needed any time a plane is crashed and repaired (happens often)
a couple generic brands are ultracote and duracote. Find a hobby store in your area and they will know what you are talking about.

I would think photography places would have different colored filters to go over the lenses to change colors.
I have a cheap strobe light I got at Party City for Halloween that came with several different colored lenses, I think they are red, green & blue.
It's worth a shot

So i went out and checked a couple more places, I went to HobbytownUSA and they had that stuff you were talking about criera . They had a bunch of colors but not clear purple or clear blue just a clear red. It was like $13 though and i only need a little bit... so a little expensive maybe i can start product and sell it?? haha
I also tried Radio Shack thinking they might have those films that they use for stage lights but nothing, and then Office Depot and all i could find there was a clear purple clipboard it may work if i cut it??
Gosh i know i see this stuff all the time i just cant think of where. Steve keep me posted i may try those dividers i saw there only like 50 cents a piece so no harm in trying.
EDIT: dang i wish i could find some of those old school red and blue 3D glasses that would work

i didnt even think about you having to buy a whole roll of the stuff. Sorry to point you in the wrong direction. now that you mention it, yeah you could probably do about 1500 clocks with 1 roll of the stuff. so...I'll go in on my 5 square inches if you pul the trigger, lol.
fwiw there are a nearly infinite number of colors out there even in the clear/translucent but obviously you dont need a whole role of ea color just for the one little piece either way.
I suppose if one was motivated and or frugal enough, you could go to the rc equivalent of t4r; RCGroups.com: The ABCs of Radio Control - Aircraft, Boats, and Cars! Ive seen people giving away small scraps for free on several occasions since people usually are doing a repair or a new covering job where either way there is always scrap pieces left over.
anyways good luck with the search and let us know what you figure out, im currently in the process of converting my int lights to white led so im quite interested.

I think this can be a big thing if we get it figured out. For those that have done or are doing the LED conversion, the clock sticks out like a sore thumb
Thanks for the ideas there. I talked to My Brother in Law, he used to work for a printing company so he had all kinds of ideas. He found this theater store in Salt Lake and i guess they give away a whole book load of these translucent samples for those old school color gel covers for the stage lights.... remember those? so yeah He's working down in SLC tomorrow and said he'll try to snag one of those. So we may be in business??
Has anyone taken their clock out? Im sure its not a big deal im just hoping its accessible to stick something on the front.

EDIT: Dont read this method much better one down there!!
So im not completely satisfied with the color but this may be the closest we can get... Im still waiting on the swatch book of gell inserts for those stage lights so i may get to experiment a little more
However i couldn't wait for those so i bought this at walmart for like $2
I cut a piece off using a dremel, dont diss on my cutting skills i know they suck :P
I stuck it on using some clear scotch mounting squares. i just cut little pieces off and stuck them on the sides
and vuala! no more green clock

cool beans. so is it only blue that you need to overlay? I thought i saw or read that you need blue and red? I just noticed i have some blu ray discs that come in a blueish case. If only blue is needed, i might have to do this today.

yeah if your going that route you need a blue and a red to get somewhat of a violet/purple.
i originally went over to look for the Kaboom cleaner but they didn't have it so i found this and it worked pretty good.
EDIT: post some pics when you get it done!
