AISIN Manual locking hubs

Looky looky , I just picked these up today.

Now I have to get some bearings and seals...

Here are the step by step directions for the conversion to Manual locking hubs.

Remove wheel.

Here was my hub before the conversion. Note my wheel spacer.

My wheel spacer and stock hub.

Remove the wheel spacer, hub cap, cotter key, lock washer and 36mm nut.

Remove the 10mm and 12mm bolt that hold the brake line to the knuckle. Remove the 10mm bolt that hold the ABS speed sensor and pull sensor out.

Remove the Caliper and hang on the frame. I used a S hook from a bungee cord and hung it up.

Remove the Rotor

Remove the upper and the 4 lower ball joint bolts and remove Knuckle.

Put knuckle assembly in vise and remove bolts that hold splash shield.

Use a puller (I am using a 7-ton two jaw puller from sears, works great) and push the spindle out.

Remove the giant E-clip that holds the bearing in the knuckle and press out knuckle.

Press in a new bearing, install your giant e-clip, splash shield, and outer seal (I had bought new ones but the old ones were good enough to re use)

Now you can press in the Manual lock spindle into you knuckle. I pressed it back together and brought the knuck back to the vise for further assembly.

Now you install the ABS Hall generator.

Now the locking nut. Tighten it down to 204 foot pounds. I used the 4 pin tool.

Stake the lock nut using a hammer and punch then Install inner seal.

Pull the old CV axle out and install the manual locking axles. Grease the axle generously.

Install the knuckle assembly back onto your upper and lower ball joints. I install the broached washer along with a circle clip.

Bolt in the Aisin Locker body and the 12mm bolt that locks the Aisin Cog to the axle.

Bolt Aisin Outer body to the hub using 6 - 10mm bolts. These bolts are marked 7, so they are quite weak, do not over tighten.

Bolt Spacer back on. 83 foot pounds and use locktite to prevent the spacers from loosening up.

Bolt wheel back on.

Back to OEM look. with the hub cap installed.

Sorry but I had to cut some photos out. The Forum only allows 20 photographs.

Update: After waiting almost a month to get the tool from ebay- Actually the seller was a jerking me around, so i had to file a complaint with ebay and got my money back. I then bought another tool from ebay (different seller) and it came like 4 days later.

I was able to take the lock nut off but what a pain in the butt to push the spindle out.

I will take some pictures of the process today.

I got the tool and broke the locking nut off. Easy as pie.

OK. Pushing out the spindle is the biggest pain in the Butt on our trucks. OMG!

I found out the bearings in these hubs weren't the original. They were made by timkin. I think they were tighter then the original.

The hubs with oem bearings came out of my truck so much easier.

I have a 20 ton press but the spindle face is significantly wider then the knuckle housing so i could not use it. The FSM say that there is a special tool but all it looked like to me, was that it looked similar to a 2 arm puller.

So that is what I used.

So about my messy work bench. Not enough time in the day.

After about 45 minutes of messing around. She finally came out.

You got the axle hub out with a puller? When I did mine on the Tacoma it took a 40 ton press to get it out....You must have some massive arms and strength...LOL Nice job...

I'm gonna do my Runner when I get the time...I have the lock-outs just gotta buy some axle hubs , bearings and seals.I am going to keep my ABS ring so that stupid light won't come on...

Sweet! With the multi-mode system what has to be done to the electrical system that goes along with it? I'm debating on doing this or just switching out everything and ditching the whole system all together.

You don't have to anything with the electric system or the stock ADD system on the front axle. I am installing this on my Limited and it will work fine. The only issue is that if the hubs are unlock, the AWD button will cease to function - Actually, the 4runner will not even drive, all the drive power will go to the front diff and just spin around.
