Rear Diff Breather Mod

I followed most of the instructions from this link:
4Runners.org - Type R Rear Differential

But was curious as to the possible advantage of installing the breather in the filler neck gasket. I'm not too keen on the look of it sticking out there so I security tied my breather as high up on the filler neck behind the plastic shroud as possible. Also twisted a loop in the hose just above the axle to give it more room for movement so hose wouldn't get pulled off the nipple (threaded union)

Which way did you go?

I did it like that link did it. I think the reason for it is that it is a high spot, relatively clean (doesn't get splashed), and accessible. Some guys have run it inside the cab, which is fine too.

Personally, I don't care about it coming out the filler neck gasket. I never even noticed it when filling and I don't see a problem with it. I ran my diff-lock breather up there too. Both are very out of the way, and stay clean.

Not available. I could take one tonight, but there really isn't much to it. Check out my build thread. I have a pic I took right after taking off the filler neck gasket. There is a ton of sand and crap right behind the gasket, so pushing it through the gasket does make a big difference in how dirty it gets.

I didn't have the breather tube piped up there at the time I took that pic though.

I'll just look at mine and hopefully I have some tubing laying around the house I can steal off some other project.

Yeah, I just bought some vacuum tubing and adapters from autozone and extended it up there. It's just as easy as the diff extension, cost about $5.

I started out with mine high up on the filler neck but it got too crudded up there so now it's through the gasket. Much cleaner.

Rear differential breather valve and pressure buildup

I ran mine up under the hood (drivers side wheel well)

I'd have some concerns about gear oil odors inside the cab when running it into the interior.

I just did this mod on my truck. Here's a video on how I did it. I basically followed what others have done in the past.

I ran mine up inside the rear pillar. Definitely no gear oil odors and frankly gas cap level isn't high enough to keep mine out of the water!
