How many miles should you expect?
I was just thinking, hope to get a good 300,000 miles out of my T4R (less than 70k now)... just was wondering is 300k realistic, or rare without major repairs, of course with proper care. I just want to get the most out of the cost on it.... and I know Toyota have a good reputation with reliability. I'm sure some of the 3rd gen guys can vouch for 300k+. Thoughts?

There is a high mileage thread: link
There are some 300K+ and even some (at least 1) 400K+ from what I remember.
So yeah, 300K isn't unreasonable. I'm over half-way there with no signs of quit thus far.

I somehow missed that thread, that's amazing... I can't fathom 400k... but I will sure try to get there! I am not a big fan of the 5th gens so that's why I am curious on what to expect from our 4th gens. I sure hope the 6th gens are better looking, whenever that happens.

Realistic?? Definitely!!
My 4runner currently has over 200k miles. I previously owned 2 Pathfinders and they both had well over 300k miles when I got rid of them. This 4runner seems as good as either of them. I expect to easily reach the 300k mile mark....maybe shooting for 400k miles.

Change the oil and keep up on your maintenance, you should have no problems. My service advisor told me that my truck will last to 500,000 if I keep caring for it the way I do!

I just hope there is a 6th gen, I've read that they weren't making anymore after the 5th gen runs its course

I started a thread over in the Off Topics section about this news story of a 1982 Land Cruiser setting a world record. Has over 400K miles:
Couple's Land Cruiser Lands In Guinness Book Of World Records
Hopefully our modern 4th gen 4Runners will do even better.

Several years ago, Toyota was going to stop making the FJ Cruiser, but it is still in production. Wish they would come out with a removable top version.
When my wife's CX-9 finally dies out, my strategy is to talk her into a Land Cruiser. If that fails, my backup plan was the 5th gen 4Runner...or 6th gen if her CX-9 lasts that long.

My 04 is up to 172k and is like new. I bet it will go at least double this. The build quality of the 4th gen(and 3rd gen for that matter) is very good. I have a 1999 ford superduty w/176k miles(that I only drive when a big truck is needed) and I think it would be lucky to make it to 250k. In comparison, the ford feels worn out. All in all, dont worry, keep up on your maintance and it will keep on going.

Several factors come into mind when I considered how long my 4runner will last.
1. Maintenance. Ask anyone, reg oil change and regular servicing of the 4runner will always be the key in squeezing all the potential out of your 4runner.
2. Location. This is not something everyone will agree upon, but I think where my 4runner has spent time makes a huge difference in the life expectancy. I live in NJ and moved to Erie, PA for school. Erie has terrible winters and after the first winter I noticed the increase in rust underneath my car. It went through 3 bad winters and it has taken a toll on the car. This past year I spent mostly in FL and this car has not been challenged yet from the seasons/weather.
3. Play. How you use the car. Offroad, rock crawling, hauling, soccermom SUV. 4runner can def handle no matter the role it plays but there is considerable difference btwn and rock crawler life vs soccer mom.
Personal I will just continue to repair and fix all the problems the my 4runner has and when it dies...I will prob do something fun with it..keep it as a project. Regardless, I hate the new 5th gen and am waiting for the 6th as well.

221K for me and maintenance is key. My V8 requires timing belt changes and I go beyond the typical water pump and belt by replacing all the other things like tensioners and bearings, hoses etc. I am more of a pre-maintenance person and continuously flush systems, drain and change as well and stay on top of all the fluids that make this thing hum. I have a maintenance log book to track all changes and replacements so I can see when I did things last. I dont like getting caught with surprises although my methods are not 100%....SH*T happens and when it does I repair/replace as needed. Gas and go is not my view on these trucks, they still need TLC and they will in turn keep me on the road for the long haul. My goal is 300K so in theory I should hit this in 4 more years.....we shall see.

I moved on from my '98 3rd Gen that I bought new (531,*** km) 330,*** miles this past March only because it fell victim to the frame rust issue. Otherwise, it ran beautifully.
I then picked up an equally good condition 06' 4th Gen Ltd. (200,*** km) 124,***. I'm making sure it's sprayed annually (especially inside the frame) and expect the same if not longer lifespan.
Take care of it and it will take care of you.
Oh and my 1st was an '88 1st gen Runner with the removable top.
I miss that truck.
