Which Remote Starter + Alarm?

EDIT:

Been looking into some more. Looks like they run anywhere from $100 to $200.

I've looked at some Compustar ones, very nice indeed but somewhat expensive but affordable.

I also saw some other cheaper ones on www.sonicelectronix.com - but I don't know how good they are.

Anyone got a review or a buying guide? Should I stay with the compustar one?

Here is what I need:
-Car Alarm
-Keyless Entry
-Remote Starter
-It can be LCD with the picture of a car and a screen or just a plain one with buttons. Both work.

NViejeP 04-06-2006 12:14 AM

And also sorry for the multiple post, but can someone explain how it works? Do I start it and then stick the key in the ignition or how?

Mark86 04-06-2006 12:21 AM

I have the Pursuit by Audiovox. Once the truck is started, your factory remote will not work. You either have to use an aftermarket keyless entry system or just do it the old fashoined way by putting the key in the door. Basically, you push the button on your remote and the truck will start. Mine stays running for 5 minutes and then turns off if I don't put the key in. Once you get in, you have to put the key in and turn it to the 'on' position. Then hit the brake pedal and your ready to go. If you hit the brake before putting the key in, the truck will shut off as a safety feature.

Thanks Mark! That clears up a lot. I plan on getting a keyless with remote door lock and a alarm? Anyone have a ballpark guess of what it'll cost?

NViejeP 04-06-2006 09:25 AM

I've been sold. I need one of these keyless entries and remote starters... anyone have a good brand/model?

holzapfel 04-06-2006 11:48 AM

ccheck out these guys..

http://www.directed.com/

can be very expensive. I have the clifford rsx3.5. Viper, Clifford & Python are basically the same.

later,

NViejeP 04-06-2006 08:43 PM

How much did itcost to get your alarms and stuff installed? My 2 local stores charge a whopping $250 just for installation. It's crazy.

holzapfel 04-06-2006 09:06 PM

I paid $606 for system and install :bugeye:

NViejeP 04-06-2006 09:25 PM

Geez.. the alarm and remote starter itself will cost more than the damn system i'm trying to protect.

texas4rnr 04-09-2006 06:48 PM

Bulldog

look on stylinconcepts.com - Bulldog 2 way remote start with keyless entry.

I've read that the viper doesn't have that great of quality so I think the Bulldog brand is what I personally will go with.

I only know this because I want a remote start on my vehicle too.
I just don't know if I can install it myself without crapping everything out?

holzapfel 04-09-2006 08:09 PM

I'd like to know where you read viper quality in't that good. Any links?

Thanks,

ironadrenaline 04-09-2006 09:36 PM

yeah ummm viper not good? its been proven as one of the best. i have a viper remote start with the factory alarm and im in love. the range is remarkable and its perfect. no problems here and mine with install was 300 but thats because i know the guys at the shop.

texas4rnr 04-09-2006 10:10 PM

consumer review

I know Viper is renowned for being one of the top security systems. What I read was a consumer review for a 2 way Remote Starter. I was on so many sites, I don't remember where I was, but it stated that he had to replace the FOB (clicker) twice in one year. He said that he did not drop it or treat it roughly... just that he had to replace the clicker twice because it kept crapping out on him. His rating was like 5 stars every else but the quality.

Anyone have the Clifford Matrix 2 way remote start?

holzapfel 04-10-2006 05:45 AM

I have the Clifford matrix 3.5, it is the exact same thing as viper 791. parts are even interchangeable.

4runnerndachi 04-10-2006 08:13 PM

Is the viper system, the one that talks...?

is so, which model is it????

I want the alarm, but I want to keep the factory keyless entry, is that possible, or does the factory disengage, and you must use the viper keyless entry.....

broncosi 10-10-2006 09:58 AM

any alarm can talk, i had my python remote start, keyless entry, alarm installed yesterday and he asked what i wanted it to do.

he said the most effecient mod to an alarm would be more sirens, so i thought id put one in the back, the stock one in the engine bay. The guy installing it had 7 on his !!

he also said i could buy the one that talks.

i also heard that if you get an alarm that disables your keyless entry.

texas4rnr 10-10-2006 03:17 PM

I've got the Clifford RSX 3.5 It has virtually everything. Except talking features. Since it's a 2 way it beeps, chirps and vibrates. It has keyless entry remote start alarm and other programmable options. I could program several things into if i wanted but I'd never use it - I did program to be able to roll the back window down. you can program to have the air turned on or defrost or something - i usually keep mine at one temp so i don't need to program that. i work right by a set of train tracks and the dang alarm goes off every time a train goes by so any heavy rattle sets it off/

I like this system.

broncosi 10-11-2006 07:35 AM

the thing you said about it going off around train tracks, the python and viper have this thing called progressive learning where if the alarm goes off due to a shock sensor three times and no doors have been bypassed or hood, then the alarms computer considers it a nuisance, and ignores it if it happens again.

texas4rnr 10-12-2006 12:52 AM

right but you can't reset the alarm - my car is right outside and the alarm goes off and is very loud - since i answer 911 calls the last thing i need is for my alarm to be sounding during someone elses's emergency. although kind of funny when i think about it not very for someone else i guess

rugger bugger 10-12-2006 03:18 AM

i wanted to get remote start in my 94...but with the 5spd...they couldnt do it...liablility...but if u go to BestBuy...the price covers installation...i think it is $380 for the Viper with the pager and LCD screen...with remote start...but i might be wrong...i know BestBuy can sometimes suck...but if u find a good one...and the car ausio guys know what they are talkin about...u can go to them for anything...

broncosi 10-12-2006 08:00 AM

i would never go to best buy in my life again after my recent experience, thats where i went first to get a viper put in.

i went to buy the viper that had remote start and keyless entry and set up to have it installed the next day. Now i work 50 hour weeks and i get paid a decent amount, but i get paid by the hour so i planned 30 min to go with my gf and drop my car off, fill out the paper work and go back to work.

We get there and he opens the box and it had already been installed and torn out of another car?? They sold me a completly used and torn up alarm system. The BB associate working in the garage tells me no worries, you can drive all the way across town to our other location and pick one up and drive all the way back here in morning traffic while is pouring down rain. :awais: So im gone because he had already started to tear my car down. I get to the other store and the guy working in car audio is a complete ass to me and i told him my troubles and nicely said a 10% discount would be acceptable for my hassles. He laughs and says dude im not giving you any discount you can go to customer service, gives me my box and points the other way.

i go to customer service and she rings up the alarm and the labor prices are included so she took that out because it was getting installed at the other location so after fighting for a discount i end up leaving paying $40 more that i should have. I asked to speak with a manager several times but he was busy with a door that wouldnt close in the back that had to be closed because it was raining . . . She also said no worries, when you get back to the other location you can wait in their customer service line and return this there for the full amount and re-ring it up with installation included for the cheaper price. I said whatever and took it and left.

i got back to the other location that my car was at in the garage and went and waited in the customer service line for about 15 min and finally got up there only to find out the idiot in car audio at the other place had handed me the completly wrong alarm system that had nothing but keyless entry.

So finally i get to a manager and he trys to sell me on this brand called avital. He states, it has everything that the viper you wanted had and its made by the same brand. i said whatever, do it and ill be back later.

came back and used the alarm for a few days and it sucked big time. had none of the features that the viper would have. I later found out that it was a knock off brand of viper that was on clearance that they were trying to get rid of. I got shafted by the manager of best buy:(

i said F-it and cut my losses and took everything to circuit city and they took my car in the garage immidiatly and tore out the avital and installed a python remote start, keyless entry, and 2-way alarm system and couldnt have been nicer about it, he talked to me half of the time he was doing it about why my experience went to wrong and he let me vent about it and then asked me the right question BB should have asked, "what do you want your alarm to do?" He told me the alarm i had was the same as viper its just CC carries python and BB carries viper but he could make it do just about anything i wanted it to. I told him nothing really just protect my car, he says ok ill throw an extra siren on then for free and i garentee youll want more stuff for it so bring it back in a week and let me know how things are going.

well ive had my system for a week and im deffinitly going back for a talking siren and a few other programming things but other than that, i will never go to BB again in my life and CC is still on the top in my book :bigok:

texas4rnr 10-12-2006 04:09 PM

I used to work for BB - I didn't get my system installed there although it was the cheapest place. I shopped around for installation pricing ( I purchased my system online) and the pricing for install ranged from 250 to 500. I did the mid range install and am pleased with it. I paid about 300.00 after taxes and purchasing the bypass. I would highly recommend getting a copy of a key if you lose a key.

Uneek 10-13-2006 01:44 AM

Python, Viper and Hornet are the same, which is originally made by DEI. Clifford and Avital were from the same company, now owned by DEI also. What may happen is a high end Viper might be a mid-range Python and vice-versa. Some Clifford alarms like the Matrix is a rebadged DEI alarm. IMO, the best alarms are the Clifford G4/G5 family systems, Intelliguard or Avantguard. They utilize CliffNet and are fully customizable through a PC with Wizard. I wouldn't use anything else.

broncosi 11-02-2006 09:32 AM

ok so recently ive seen some pimp my rides where they are using the python 2-way that i have. They used the AUX button to open all the doors and then somehow they hooked up the remote start to a motion sensor on the inside of the A-pillar.

what do yall use the AUX button for? im just trying to get a little more out of my system.

texas4rnr 11-02-2006 02:29 PM

I use it for the rear window. I can crack it a little on 3 levels or roll it all the way down depending on how many taps I use ( I have a Clifford RSX 3.5 ) same thing as Viper pretty much

broncosi 11-02-2006 04:15 PM

how much extra was that to hook up though?

texas4rnr 11-02-2006 04:50 PM

Free - I paid install and they put the codes in for me. They didn't charge extra for that. I have like 3 more aux options I could have programmed but I wouldn't ever use them. I could have had all the windows roll down and stuff- but I didn't see the point because I can roll the windows down myself. The back window is nice for groceries and whatever so I don't have to open the hatch - I can't roll it back up though from the remote. That's the only downside. There is no code for that.

Toyota alarm with autostart

I got a quote from my toyota stealership, $795 with installation.

THey said since this is toyota it wont void the warranty on the car.

Is this true ? that installing a 3rd party alarm will void the warranty ?

texas4rnr 11-06-2006 02:25 PM

Some people say yes and others no. I asked my dealership and they said yes. I waited until my warranty was up - the factory alarm was fine and very functional so I wasn't in any hurry. To be truthful, I love the remote start feature but the 2-way is a lot of money to invest into something that only works half the time.... (you have to be within range to be notified your car is broken into plus you have to be around your keys to hear the alarm even though it's REALLY loud - if you have it on vibrate you're kinda screwed unless you have it in your pocket or whatever)

Sorry for the segway.

No, not under the Magnusson Moss Act. The dealer must prove that installation of the alarm caused failure to which ever component in question.

Say a turbo was installed and the engine or transmission gives out. They can deny warranty for either one. But if the radio doesn't work because of the turbo, there's no relationship between the modification and failure, and the dealer has to honor the warranty for the radio.

I was thinking of getting a remote starter for my truck, since I live in frigid Alberta where the average temperature for 7-8 months a year is -20 degrees C.

However, since my truck is a '96 5 speed manual, I am wondering if this is even possible??!?!?

Anyone have any information on this? Done numerous Google searches and found this website! but not much help otherwise!!

You can get a remote start on a manual transmission vehicle, though it's not recommended because it can be left accidentally in gear. The installer will need to hook up a relay to bypass the clutch switch. I've heard stories from a couple friends who have remote starters in their cars and started the car when they left the transmission in gear. The car can and will jump a curb.

sharp4runr 11-02-2007 08:54 AM

Yup, what Uneek said. Interestingly enough, I've seen one on a motorcycel too. Guy said he once left it in gear and started the bike remotely. Of course bike fell over and cursing ensued...

ProudCanuck75 11-06-2007 03:01 PM

Thanks for the input!! Making a few calls around for Viper Systems.

In the meantime some bozo at Wal*Mart ran a shopping cart into the drivers door!! Argh. BUt thankfully no scratch and just a minor dent - looked scratched but the blue cart paint buffed away nicely.

Snow and Ice have arrived so the 4x4 will be getting a work out soon!!
