2005 Sport won't start
Friend of mine has a 2005 Sport that wouldn't start out of the blue. He took it to a shop and was told the timing chain jumped. $2000 a best but likely needs an engine. Truck has roughly 250K miles on it and ran fine up until this point. I find it hard to believe this happened after being parked and wouldn't start the next day. Anyone have any ideas? If this is a timing chain issue, is this an interference engine?

I haven't looked at it yet but he says it cranks normally, sounds normal, just doesn't turn over. Anything is possible but I don't believe it's a timing chain failure. For it to run fine the night before, not start the next day, sound normal while cranking, just doesn't add up. More like maybe a fuel pump or something along those lines.

If its getting air...no squirrel nesting in the air box...
Maybe a EFI fuse? Or bad contact of fuse.
In the engine bay...
Is it getting gas, air and spark? Right you know this.

I know nothing as of yet. I will have the truck in my possession in the next few days so I will dig into it and see what I find. I actually bought the truck from him as is so now it's my problem but I got it for a great price so it's worth it no matter what. Looks like I've now joined the 4th gen family!

I plan to check all the simple stuff first. It's 100% stock, no aftermarket electrical at all. His mechanic claims it's the timing belt which it has a chain however like I said earlier I just have a hard time believing that because it ran fine the night before, he parked it, wouldn't start in the morning. I just don't see a timing chain failing while sitting there in the driveway but maybe i'm wrong. Is it common to need a timing chain at 250K miles?

I'd start with the basic things like is the starter getting enough juice from the battery. Check the bath terminals to see if they're either loose or full of gunk buildup.
Like you, I find it hard to believe it jumped a tooth overnight unless we're not hearing the whole story.
If it was indeed the timing belt, then the starter would spin the flywheel, which would spin the crank which would move the pistons up/down. But, the valves wouldn't open up and the sound coming out of the engine would be totally weird, no? We all know what a normal engine cranking sounds like and a broken timing chain would produce an abnormal if not a BANG/CLUNK/CLACK sound!

Been friends with the guy for 3 years and I have personally wrenched on this truck a number of times so I hope he's being honest. He says it cranks normally and sounds like it always has, just doesn't fire up. I haven't taken possession of the truck yet but it should be delivered to me before the end of the week. I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend lol.

OK so I got the truck today and hooked up my scanner. Mind you this is a cheap BS scanner but it's better than nothing. As a recap, truck ran fine Monday night, wouldn't start Tuesday morning when he went to leave for work. There are 15 stored codes on the computer. I can tell you in the last year, he's replaced the transmission which was done at Toyota, 6 new coils, new plugs, new radiator, new thermostat and housing, new belt, new manifolds and cats, oil changed 2 months ago, possibly more but not sure. Truck has the 4.0 and has about 250K miles on it currently. I'm leaning towards one or both of the cam sensors causing most of this and causing the no start issue but I could be wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Stored codes are as follows
P0340
P0345
P0020
P0010
P0343
P0348
P0102
P0113
P0118
P0121
P0123
P0452
P2135
P0778
P2716

I just looked up all of those codes, interesting mix ! I wonder if there's a common ground point that failed. Just a speculation, it just seems odd that seemingly unrelated things would show up as "bad" all at once.

The first 6 codes are all related to the camshaft postion and or the sensors, all the others seems to be related to what you listed above as being taken care of.
So I would think you need to start with checking to see if there any compression or lack of, this should tell you if any valves are damaged or not closing at the right time and if there's not any major issues found there I think it has to be an issue with the camshaft sensors.

Any idea how to manually test the sensors? Maybe check resistance? I don't have a compression tester unfortunately.

No, not sure how to test the sensors.
You can get a compression tester less than $30 at Harbor Freight and even less than that on Amazon.

Couple guys on here have had the cam position sensor wire cut by the fan belt... after engine work disrupted the wire routing.
