Like I said, I really don't know if things have been improved a lot or not with turbos. There are a lot of turbos out there that aren't very old due to automakers searching for ways to make power with small engines in recent years. So maybe we'll start hearing of failures as these cars age. I tend to keep my Toyotas until they wear out, so I have a tendency to think very long-term regarding vehicles.
From what I've read, the 2.7 eco is constructed similarly to a diesel motor. Longevity doesn't appear to be a concern from a buyer standpoint. There's lots of high mileage ones already around since they've been out since 2015. They are already on the 3rd iteration of the motor which hopefully translates to even greater reliability.

Funny you bring up diesel, I was just going to suggest it. I'm in the same "boat" you're in. I have a 5k lb boat that I need to tow and have been looking for something different to do the job as my runner is getting up there in miles at ~160k. I'm planning on getting a Ram 2500 with a cummins because, similar to our Runners, they don't seem to deprecate. A local 2015 here has 114k miles and is for sale for 44k! They are like 55ish new.....This case is extreme and I doubt they get that, but all other used ones are still "expensive" imho. I only run premium in my Runner so the fuel cost will be about the same until I delete the Defra fluid. In the Runner I get around 12-13 mpg normal driving and 8-9 while I tow our boat. The cummins mpg should be around 15-16. Just something else to think about. Also I hear the Tundra is getting a diesel soon too if you want to wait.

My 07 Volvo 2.5 turbo has 215k miles on it, and has never had any type of problem with the turbo or needed any turbo specific maintenance other than sticking to 6k mile oil change intervals with synthetic, as recommended by a Volvo owner's site.

I think the fact that so many cars are coming out with them now is evidence that they WILL last for the long haul.

First if you get a f150 get the 5.0, we have a large fleet of company trucks mostly xlt’s and lariets but theirs a few king ranches, out the 10 ecoboost trucks they bought in 2015 all had major motor work before 150k and all of the 5.0 have been perfect, and some are nearing 300k. They no longer buy ecoboost trucks. I have a company truck 2017 5.0 xlt 4x4 and a 2007 4runner v8. The f150 is better on the highway and more comfortable. highway mpg is the same, 17-18 going 70. When driving back to back the 4runner feels like a sports car and it even feels faster accelerating despite the nearly 100hp disadvantage. The f150 is a great truck but I would rather drive the 4runner most of the time.

I traded in my 2005 4R V8 and looked at all the pickups. Immediately rejected the ecoboost models, not nearly enough mpg relative to performance.

Which motors did they have 2.7 or 3.5? I'm not opposed to the v8, but would he happy with the performance and mpgs of the 2.7.

Not sure what you mean. You can see 20s on the hwy while not towing if you stay out of the turbos. Just like with any motor of you are to the floor all the time your mpgs will drop like a brick.

The difference in tightness of steering and driving feel is night and day between any of my ford vehicles and my 4runner. And don't ask me about towing, if you tow with an ecoboost your MPG is something like .09 miles per gallon. I watched a great youtube about how terrible it was when towing uphill. If you are going to get a Ford truck...that's neat, every other person has one and they all suck. Heck, I have two and think they are both crap, my other Ford is an F350 super duty with the 7.3L. The only reason I drive the ecoboost is because it is completely free.

In my opinion, you are not "making the switch", you are trading in a swiss watch for a dumpster with wheels that may or may not work in 6 months.
Dude this is totally excessive. I had a v8 T-Bird 97' for 16 years and that thing was great. I think you need to dial it back or people aren't going to take you seriously. You're right about all the nitpicks on the Explorer but to label the brand "the worst in the world" is totally, objectively, not true.

Fact: more vehicle fires are from Fords than the complete sum total of all other vehicle brands in the US.

That fact alone makes it the worst car brand you could choose. So you had a Thunderbird...ok? What does that have to do with anything? I have an elm tree in my yard that has been there for 16 years, it has never broken down and I love it.

I happen to OWN the most expensive ford superduty with the best engine that they have ever put in a truck... Its still a barely assembled pile of crap that cost 66,000 dollars and has had nothing but problems with everything including the "amazing" engine (which exploded once already). I feel as a Ford owner, that it is my responsibility to ensure that people do not get into the same situation as I did. Where I bought the coolest truck with the best "specs" that could tow the empire state building and thought it was soooo awesome. Until it broke. Then broke again, and again, and again, and again and etc... I am not aware of any parts on my superduty which have not been replaced, including the engine block and the steering wheel, both of which one would suspect not to be breaking at any time, much less on the most expensive Superduty diesel with 130K original miles.

I have heard nothing but bad things about the ecoboost engines. Lots of complaints about the bad gas mileage and the reliability. I personally would get the 5.0.

Not bashing Ford's. I have a 2009 FX4 that I love. It has 110k on it. Very few problems. But, I do not expect it to be as reliable as my 06 4Runner. I work on both and the 4Runner is just built better.

The Supercrew's do have a beautiful interior, and plenty of room in the back seat. All in all, I would still buy an F150 over a GM or Ram.

It was mostly lower trimmed 2.7 eco, but the mangers with the higher trims had the 3.5, all had issues. If I was planning to buy and keep a f150 long term I would get 5.0, any saving in fuel with the ecoboost is going to eaten up higher maintenance cost! Or just get plain non turbo v6, it has around 300hp!

I drive a 2016 2.7 at work 4x4 with diff locker etc. I like the ride quality and it has good acceleration. Engine and 5+ speed tranny can tow different things well mostly a water buffalo or odd trailer at work site. ~1-5k tow loads - My average for the life of the truck is 15.5 mpg and I tow like 5% of the time. Granted I have lots of idle hours, vs my boss who drives it longer distance on freeway has around 17-18.

I also dont mean to be negative, by all means if you like the truck then buy it! But I have to chime in and say I have had it in the shop for small stuff twice now within 13k miles I have put on it. My boss drives his identical truck much more and has almost 60k and has had same issues. Temp sensor malfunction affects the ac system which spent 3 days at dealership for the techs to figure it out (I told them this was probably the issue based on friends advice). Got it back and it still reads incorrect external temp but AC works now at least. My automatic and manual window controls roll themselves back down halfway ALL THE TIME and ford also had it in the shop for a couple days with other electrical issues and said they fixed it but it still does it.

I guess my complaints here are not for the motor which you seemed to be looking for but speak to the questionable quality of these new ford vehicles. I just do not have high confidence in the truck like I do with my 4runner. I know that any car at any time can have issues I do not think my 4runner is some holy grail. But the fact is my 10 year old car has the history to prove statistically it is more dependable. The new fords just cant give you that piece of mind.

I have heard so many good things about the classic 7.3 diesel. After being in a similar situation with my v6 and wanting to tow I did a TON of research. If I were you and want a towing vehicle get a tried and true 2005-2007 chevy/gmc silverado 2500 duramax with low mileage. Again sorry if I am pushing my opinion here I really just wanted to respond with my experience and my co workers with the truck.

Good points. I'm hoping those kinks were worked out in the 2017 and 18 models. This truck would be a DD for me so a 2500 diesel is out of the question, just too much truck for my needs. I've done a ton of research on the 2.7 and it seems like 95% of owners are happy. I love my 4runner, and while reliable, I've had my issues, as have other folks. I haven't decided if I'll keep my 4runner and get the truck too.

I had an early 2012 f150 ecoboost that I bought new. Without a ton of bashing I'll just say that I did like the truck and miss some things about it but overall, I had a lot of problems with it. I do understand that the new f150s are a different animal but some problems still remain. During the 2 years I owned it, it was in the shop for;

defective/broken intercooler
leaking turbo
pcm reflash
bad coil
blew the ceramic off 2 spark plugs
rough running
truck randomly stalling
oil level rising
engine knocking on cold start
lack of engine power

By 45k miles I threw in the towel and traded it in for my 2014 4runner because it just became too unreliable. I know not every f150 is like that but that was my experience. I only really achieved good mpg before the intercooler blew apart and the pcm reflash. After that mpg was consistantly 3-4 mpg lower, I actually get better mpg with the 5.7 tundra.
