silverstar vs. hid

I found a picture that contrasts the light output difference between a silverstar bulb and a 4300K d2r HID bulb.

I think the pic speaks for itself.

OK, I am a little confused by this thread. From what I have read, 03v8sport claims that the HIR bulbs fit in our T4R like any stock bulb & are somewhere between OEM bulbs & HID performance. Kimboy is trying to hijack the thread by pimping the HID option and comparing them to Silverstars, which is an apples to brussel sprouts comparison since we are talking about HIR vs HID. And TRD04RUNNER is just angry at the world. does that sum it up?

I would really like to see a comparison picture like the one Kimboy posted with the side by side of the OEM vs the HIR. I am not interested in testing my mad shadetree electrician skills on my T4R and risking my headlights exploding on the interstate one night because I could not tell the difference between the red wire & the blue wire. so if HIR bulbs would give me HID performance without any kind of alterations, it sounds like a pretty good idea to me.

sorry for the lag in gettin back to this. I took a picture with one installed and you can see a difference. I need to get that uploaded so sit tight. I'll get that up by tomorrow.

This thread was about trying an alternative to an expensive HID kit and cheaper high intensity bulbs that burn out more quickly.

Any chance you did a side by side comparison picture with OEM vs HIR? I have seen OEM vs HID, but I would like to see the HIR comparison.

Like I said, I am not interested in doing all the work required for an HID conversion kit. But if I can get better performance (near HID) from just dropping in a new bulb, and it will only cost about $50, I am all over that.

I'm so f'n lazy. I installed 1 HIR bulb into my 4R last month, but haven't dragged my ass out to take some comp pics yet.

BTW: I bought the 65w bulbs, Toshiba HIR, from the ebay seller. Great service, and the light is waaaay brigher than 55w OEM bulb. I'll have to compare the 65w silverstar bulb that I have lying around to the HIR 65w too.

Summary: if you want WHITER light and shorter life, buy Silverstars. If you want BRIGHTER light with a (reported) longer life span, buy the HIR.

Although HIR are twice the price of SS, I'm not disappointed at all. I'd love to go HID, but I don't have 300-400 beans to blow on headlights right now. I just want to see betta.

03v8sport,

That appears to be a lot more light! Any idea of why the aim is higher?

Update: it's been 11 months since I installed my first HIR bulb and I have yet to burn it out (knock-knock). I still think they are a great value: very bright for a relatively low cost.

HIR bulbs (the old John Deere trick)

I used HIR bulbs for low beams in my 99 Land Cruiser for the last four years. Great bulbs: about 33% more candlepower for the same wattage, IIRC.

I did have to grind down a tab on the bulb for it to fit, but that was minor trouble.

When the upgrade first became available about five years ago, HIR bulbs were fairly expensive -- $40 or so each. But John Deere had them available for one of their small tractors, and those bulbs were only $24 from the local JD dealership.

Is the HIR bulb just a simple swap with the OEM bulb?
Do the HIR bulbs have a whiter light output than OEM?

The HIR bulbs are slightly whiter than OEM bulbs, but not as white as silverstar bulbs. They are noticeably brighter than both.

In summary,
If you are looking for WHITE bulbs, for low cost, then buy the cheap 発音記号表 xenon bulbs on ebay.

If you are looking for BRIGHT bulbs for low cost, then buy the HIRs.

If you have the money, buy HID and you'll have the brightest, whitest bulbs on the market.
