"whub-whub-whub" noise from rear ===>

2007 Sport, 60k miles, original stock Dunlop tires.

While driving I hear a "whub-whub-whub" noise coming from the rear.

Sound seems in sync with rpm/speed.

Is this a tire thing or should I be concerned about something more serious ?

Undecided about keeping this 4runner when the lease matures in March so I haven't pulled the trigger on new tires.

Opinions on the cause of this noise ?

Is it something that gradually happened or all of a sudden? More often than not, what you're describing is tire related; either from uneven wear due to imbalance or something on the suspension such as a shock or strut worn. But you can't rule out a bearing or damaged gear.

Toyotas are tough vehicles. I'm on my 5th and 6th. The first 4 went beyond 150,000 miles with no significant issues. Two of those went beyond 200,000 with one of those (a 2nd gen T4R) now at over 300,000 miles (sold to a friend). And of all of those 4, I sold them in very good if not excellent condition. If you were contemplating dumping a domestic vehicle after 60K miles I'd understand. But not a Toyota.

I barely got 40,000mi on my stock Dunlops before they sounded like they were going to jump off the truck.

Rotate the tires - include the spare see if the sound moves??? Maybe it is one tire?????

I'm thinking I've got to bite the bullet and get it in for service........ the sounds I'm hearing can't be just from the tires (although they may be contributing)... I listened very closely on the highway today and it's getting really annoying.

Anyway.....In March, I have the option of extending the lease for 6 months or purchasing for about $19.5k.

Once I throw on some new tires maybe I'll stop thinking about getting a new vehicle... for a while.

Happened to me in my Supra with an older pair of Dunflops. Ran the fronts down basically. Because they wore faster on the inside, I didn't notice the threads exposed and then shredding.

Update

Got to a Toyota service center today:

Rear Differential assembly - needs to be replaced

Rear Passenger side wheel bearing - needs to be replaced

All four tires - need to be replaced

Toyota to cover everything but the tires under 5/60 drivetrain wty (I'm over by about 700 miles).

Free loaner car to boot.

Could have been a very expensive day.

The rear wheel bearings have been a bit of an issue with previous gens but I'd be interested here what the shop says regarding the possible reason for the diff. That's very unusual IMO. I've had 2 previous 4Runners, a 2nd gen that I sold at 205,000 miles and a 3rd gen I sold at 152,000 miles and neither had a rear diff issue nor had I heard much of premature diff failures on other Toyota forums.

I'll let you know what they say.

Also had a replacement of Hub & Bearing FR at 34k miles.

All fixed. Running like a champ. No explanation for problem.

(1) Carrier Assy, Dif - replaced
(1) Gasket, Dif - replaced
(6) Gear lube

Align four wheels.

New tires.

Feels like a new truck.

Props to the dealer for covering everything but the tires and alignment under warranty (I was just over 60k).

Good for that dealer! I know based on them "doing you right" you'll go back and spend money with them. Too bad more didn't look beyond the monthly spreadsheet (I do understand that has to work too...)
