So I took my week old 2010 4Runner Limited 4WD on it's first road trip to Mammoth from Orange County, CA. My last truck was a 2006 Jeep Commander Hemi and 4 various Isuzu Troopers before that, all veterans of hundreds of trips to Mammoth over the past 20+ years.
Impressions:
- Drives like a car! Well, more so than anything else I have had.
- Tracks straight through LA freeway rain puddles and potholes like a champ!
- I was worried about the 20" OEM Geolander tires in the snow, but the truck tracked like an arrow through 5-6" of fresh to cruddy snow on top of packed snow/ice. Even up steep hills that 2WD trucks/cars with chains had problems with. Center differential locked.
- There is an uphill hairpin turn that I like to go into full speed (10-20mph) and then turn into to see how various 4wd systems handle it. My last Trooper would lose the front end until you backed off the gas or gassed it and broke the rear loose as well and did some deft drifting. The Super Quadra Drive Jeep would do it's popping traction dance and get back on track after a bit of slide. The 4Runner seems to grab the whole way round but gives you 3 beeps to tell you it is fixing something stupid that you did.
- What's up with the rear wiper only going like 140degrees instead of 180? Why not give me a totally clean window? Looks like it was designed that way.
- Miss the seat memory... I screw it up every time I lean across the front seat from outside to grab something from the center console.
- Minimal wind noise
- Plenty of power if you hit the gas hard, and I was used to a performance chipped Hemi!
- I love the smart key!
- I hate all the chirping, seatbelt, entry, etc.. Will try and get them turned off at the dealer...
- Why can't the TPMS system tell me the exact tire pressure? Even my rental Saturn Vue had that.
So there are some minuses, but overall I'm pretty darn happy
