Do you think edmunds is a good used car price reference for a 2010 T4RTE?

Hi guys, I've been quietly lurking and admiring some of your 4R's here since I decided to start looking for a used one (I had a sweet old '88....good memories...)

Anyway, do you think the true market value prices are valid on that site? I have found internet prices, both dealer and private (though there aren't many private) on 2010's to be fairly close to what the dealer is asking for a Toyota Certified vehicle.

It's a 2010 Trail Edition in Classic Silver with 32,000 miles, w/no big extras. What would you be looking to pay? I'm in CT by the way. Thanks in advance.

I used edmond's to purchase mine... Get ready to get lots of calls from the dealers!!! I think it was great as I didn't have to waste my time driving back and forth to see if they had what I was looking for. They'll even negotiate with you on the phone before you arrive to the dealer!

I'd say yes to they hold their value, so you can expect to pay a bit more.

My local dealer was ready to give me $30,000 on a trade for a 2013 and I had 64,000 miles on the truck.

Had too many mods in it already to really jump on it.

The only help I can offer is what I was quoted 2 months ago.

For a 2013 $41K TE, discounted to $38.9K, I was offered $28K for my mostly-loaded SR5 with 31,000 miles.

Don't know what they'd have listed mine at, as I didn't trade.

You said it. I've been getting calls all week from the dealer I emailed an inquiry to. Yeah, I'm hoping they'll discuss price over the phone since I am about an hour and a half away from this place and I'm not sinking a 3 hour round trip without knowing we're in the same ballpark first.

philsey, what year is your SR5?

So I'm still looking and basically still not sure what I should pay for a 2010 4Runner Trail (non KDSS as far as I know). It looks clean and has 32K miles.

Unfortunately there aren't many of these around, and not many sold ads or completed ebay listings to gauge what to pay. KBB, etc...I don't know, it's all online now so maybe that's a good thing. But they're asking $30,000 and it's an hour and a half one way to the dealership.

No GPS.
No KDSS (I think).

So what do you all think? What would you pay? I just don't have enough data to know what a fair price is here and I feel I'm at a disadvantage.

smallcrap, sounds like you might have found my trail I sold to a dealer a while back - i sold it to a dealership in MA and they said they were sending it to CT. Still a slight chance that it is but if so, they bought it from me for $28500. It is a pretty basic trail edition in classic silver, but I got all the accessories on it and sold it like that - exhaust tip, trunk mat, cargo nets, hitch cover...all little stuff and in the meantime could've been removed. If it sounds like it could be the one, feel free to PM me if you want to know more and I could be of any help. I probably have the VIN around somewhere and thats probably the only way to make sure its the same one, if you know it and wanna check if its the same, feel free. Slight chance but if it is the same 4runner and I can be of any help thats part of what these forums are about.


Shoot - forget that actually, regardless of whether its the same t4r or not, I can tell u this much. Based on what you said it is like it seems similiar to what I owned before. I bought it brand new in 2010 a few months after the 5th gens were released at a price of $32500 plus tax (original msrp i think was around $37000 to $38000 I think for the one I had). I drove it all around the country over a period of 2.5 yrs to just over 30000 miles and was able to sell it for $28500. I still keep in touch with my salesman and the dealership I bought it from is pretty good. If you want their info I can PM you it, and I assure you nothing in it for me, didn't just graduate from med school to sell cars haha. But if I was you, I'd try to get close to what I paid in 2010 instead of buying the one you are looking at.

The cool thing about Edmunds is they have a forum section too. There is one for Real World Trade-In Values and if you post your specs in there, the contributors will check recent auction prices and give you a pretty good idea for your area. They've been close with my last two trades and should be a good starting point for negotiations if you are looking to buy.

i got 31500 for my 2010 limited in january.. they listed it at 35.. and now it's at 33,400.. it has 44k miles. picked up my 2011 trail for 33200 with 33k miles

Yeah, I have to look up the original MSRP but it was around that 37k to 38k range and we got the price down to 32.5k not including tax title et al.

Well in that case what you think is wrong. I got a great deal at the time of purchase and the msrp was just over 37k. I am surprised you can speak for all Toyota dealers and their reasoning from 3 years ago. Sorry if your negotiation skills were not as fruitful.

I admit that seems like an unusual deal but I guess they've been known to happen. In fact, my wife and I had a similar experience when buying an Accord a few years back. The guy was just super nice and wanted to move the car and we were shocked when he agreed to our first lowball offer.

And really this kind of inconsistency in pricing and deals is what bugs me. I assume all the sites out there that have "true market values" or indicate what a great deal is, are based on listed prices and not actual sold prices. I doubt dealerships would ever give up their actual sale price data.

You just don't know what you should pay and you're always at a disadvantage at the dealership - unless you're lucky enough to not have to care about money as much.

Are you sure about that? I've read several members here getting pretty amazing prices in areas where the dealer's inventories are full of 4runners (I think Colorado was one of them). It varies greatly by region, and this is why I say it's not always the best thing to be asking about vehicle pricing on an internet forum where the membership base is so spread out.

ie. a guy from a cheap region asking a guy from a pricey region is going to be thinking he's getting a hell of a deal; and vice versa, the guy from the pricey region is probably going to feel like he's getting rip off
