WAMPA Jr. Build

I just presented my MPH Capstone and have some time off so figured I'd start a dedicated thread for my 2016 Limited. Been a member here since 2013, started off with a 13' Trail Edition which I ended up selling to my old man when he retired to Todos Santos, Baja Sur. It's serving him well down there. Owned a 2007 Rubicon before my first 4Runner and cycled through a 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road before coming back to the 4Runner. In the interim I purchased a 97 FZJ80 (WAMPA Senior) to build up as a trail rig, which ended up serving me as a daily driver while finishing up my grad program at Cal due to all the crazy drivers and crime up here.

I've discussed my reasons for getting into/out-of the Taco before. Long story short the new Tacoma is a stout rig, I beat the heck out of mine in the Maze District of Canyonlands but realized after a week in the truck with my brother as navigator that the cabin was just too small for us. I also didn't have a specific need for the bed other than carrying camping gear which the 4Runner is more than capable of doing. Overall fit and finish on the 4Runner is significantly better.. they may seem similar enough at first (they did to me) but after some serious seat-time the little differences began to add-up.

Needless to say I'm thrilled to have been able to get back into a 5th gen, perfect combination of comfort and utilitarianism. I went with the Limited this time around for my personal preference for a full-time 4wd transfer case, factory leather, and no kdss. I belong to the camp that believes that kdss is fantastic for non or mildly lifted applications, but knowing what I was going to be using this truck for I wanted to maximize front differential ground clearance and maintain the potential for long-travel in the future.

I've got a list of thank-you's to specific forum members that I'll post later, I need to figure out how to link them in posts first. It's an ongoing joke with my family and friends that whenever I do mods "easily" or "within a day" that I did it in a few hours plus a few years (of trial and error/learning experiences). It's my hope that others can learn from some of the experiences I've been through and perhaps find influence for their own rigs. I've got a series of postdated photos that I'll throw up shortly.

for all those Star Wars fans... WAMPA!!!

Here's my old 4Runner, keeping dogs cool in Todos Santos apparently.

3rd gen Tacoma I owned for a few months, sold it back to the dealer for less than 1k than I paid for it. Great truck but didn't fit my needs. Some dudes on the Tacomaworld forum and craigslist got a great deal on the AllPro sliders, bedrack, and KO2 tires I had bought for it already.

Current 4Runner when I took it home, plus a few shots after getting back from 4x4Labs for a rear bumper and sliders, maiden voyage out to Sequoia National Park, and my pup Jasper keeping guard while I do some work around the yard.

Demello front bumper and winch install. The control pack for the ComeUp Seal Gen2 9.5 winch has dovetails that line up really well with a factory inner-bumper support/upright as seen in the photos. No drilling required, just a trip to the hardware store to get the proper bits.

Suspension install. Radflo 2.5" coilovers with 700lbs springs, AllPro 3.5" rear coils which will be swapped out later for increased load capacity. Running Radflo 2.5" rear shocks as well. Also installed AllPro stainless steel braided extended hoses front and rear. Needed them in the rear for this lift height, front was optional but figured do it once and cry once and it sets me up for long travel later on.

With all the added weight the AllPro 3.5" rear coils were having trouble keeping up. I knew this going into it but it was the best option at the time. My buddy with a GX470 runs OME medium rear coils and I was unsatisfied with the harshness of his ride when unloaded.. granted he doesn't sag when loaded down for trips. I'm currently on a quest for a goldilocks coil.

Installed Dobinsons progressive 400+lb rear coils to give them a shot, plus a Sonoran Steel track bar while I was at it.

Some shots from our most recent trip, Death Valley for a few nights. Started at Eureka Dunes, southeast through Dedeckera Canyon/Steel Pass out through Saline Valley for the night. We weren't too excited with what we saw at the warm springs so camped up on the eastern escarpment of the Inyo Mountains. Traveled up Lippencott Pass the next day to the Racetrack and east over to Hidden Valley for the night. Next day went up South Pass then down through Death Valley Proper to Goeler Canyon for the night. Sended Mengel pass the next day and punched out via Ballarat the next day. Topped it off with a night at Alabama hills. Buddy in the Lexus had a funky winch issue which we had to sort out before heading up Lippencott. My brother's Grand Cherokee also suffered a swaybar link failure, nothing major and in fact we were all super impressed with how well it did. He left halfway through though, getting him up Mengel pass would have been another story.
