I’m typically one to opt out of warranties but my credit union offered a 100k extended warranty for $600 on my 16 4runner. I decided to give it a shot for a little extra piece of mind.

I have a 2012 Limited and purchased a 7yr/100K extended wty (Platinum w/$0 ded.) through Toyota (not the dealership) in Apr 2012. It cost $795. I have 90K miles on my vehicle and have used the wty three times:
1. Replaced door driver lock actuator (~$350)
2. Replaced X-REAS suspension due to leak (~$3300)
3. Replaced rear liftgate struts (~$450)
Prices above are dealer repair costs - no doubt the repairs could have been done cheaper, but I don't do that myself so the ext wty has been a good investment for me. Still have about 10K miles and 16 months before it expires.

I bought the seven year - 100,000 mile all inclusive warranty on my 2013 when I bought it used with 28,000 miles on it.
Now at 81,000 miles. Have never had to use it. Since there is so much new fangled electronic s on it I thought the extra insurance was worth it.
I will probably still be driving it at 200,000 miles --> and hope to never need it.

Perfect vehicle as it stands for northern Nevada terrain. Keep it stock - it'll go most anywhere as is.

I just purchased the 5 yr / 100k Platinum. I don't usually do extended warranties but with so many electronics and computers these days, I'd be hard pressed to DIY any of that stuff and costs can add up fast.
I had to pay off my truck to qualify for a home loan so a one time payment that was just a bit more than my previous monthly car payment made it an easy decision.

So, 1/3 (33.33%) of the respondents thus far have the extended warranty, and only 10% of those with the warranty have had to use it.
Small sample size but hopefully others will contribute further data points.

That is some good data to make a warranty decision. How does one get the warranty directly from Toyota? The dealer that sold us the 4Runner are pretty much full of morons... Techs who get paid Minimum wage who are trained by YouTube Videos who will grantee To F-Up the most simple tasks... and Horrid customer service in dealing with the public... But i digress.Would be nice to deal with Toyota directly and purchase their approved warranty.

See this thread. One of our members has been getting quotes for other members on a ToyotaCare extended warranty.
I haven't made up my own mind as yet, (hence the poll), but I have another year before needing to do so.

When I purchased mine the finance girl was adamant that if I didn't get it my car would break down on the side of the road and the 17 different computers controlling the car would all go out. I told her "Barring someone from this dealership cutting wires while I'm in here, I don't think that's possible. I'm buying a Toyota not a kia."
You better believe I reported that idiot.
Also, no I don't want key fob replacement insurance, tire repair insurance, nor the 5 other stupid things you're charging to much for. What do I sign declining all of that so that I can get out of here faster.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to get one.
I am going to wait till right before the 3 year mark, but between all the electronics, and the KDSS suspension, I figure it'll only take one issue to make it worth it.
Obviously hope I don't need it, but at the price I was quoted, it's not a big deal for 5 more years of peace.

I skip the warranties on our Japanese cars. If you pay $1000-1500 for a warranty, the repairs seem to be much lower.

With 80 respondents thus far, 2/3 have no extended warranty.
1/3 have the extended warranty.
Two that have it have used it.
Keep 'em coming and thanks.

I added it just recently as I'm near my warranty end. Went for the 7yr 100k. $950. You can add up to the 3yr 36k point.
The primary reason I bought it was for resale value. I think I'll get close to or more than $950 in increased resale by selling with a full warranty at 5yrs 50k miles. It'll still have 2 years left. Having a transferable comprehensive warranty is worth a lot to many buyers. And I also get the warranty if anything goes wrong in the interim. I've yet to have any warranty issues. Hopefully won't. I do have a seized LCA adjustment cam that I might ask Mr. T to replace, but I'm not sure if it's covered or not.

a-hole dealer snuck one in on me.
I did have a sensor somewhere on the engine go bad, but it was in the 2 year warranty period.
Only other thing that has happened to my 2013 was the light up in right front fender Went out, moderately hard getting it out but a ***** putting it back in.

As has already been pointed out, Toyota doesn’t lose money on extended warranties so we could conclude that it would be a good bet to pass on the extended warranty. That being said, it is relatively cheap insurance. I have a 10 year, 125k mile plan. Nice to know I won’t have any necessary expenses other than wear items and maintenance while the extended warranty is in effect.
Auto/truck manufacturer extended warranties are the only extended warranties or service protection plans that I buy. Over the years, my experience has been that extended warranties have worked in my favor unless I got rid of the vehicle before the original manufacturer warranty expired and my extended warranty prorated refund represented a loss (having bought the extended warranty shortly after the vehicle was purchased new). If I have kept the vehicle for the entire duration of the extended warranty, I can’t think of a single time I would have come out ahead not purchasing the extended warranty.
In the poll, I haven’t used my extended warranty, however my 4Runner has less than a thousand miles on it. The numbers probably aren’t meaningful unless the answer to that question is after the extended warranty is at the end of the coverage duration.
