Where the heck do I put my Hi-Lift Jack?

When I had my Tacoma, I had brackets in the bed... now with my 5th Gen 4R TE I have no idea where to mount my 48" Hi-Lift jack, don't want it always taking up cargo space.

I've considered the Yakima MegaWarrior roof rack with the Hi-Lift mount, but the mount is more expensive than the jack itself.

Any ideas?

What ever you do, don't put 175 lb zip ties on the child seat latches and then post pictures on the internet... people will yell at you.

The Yakima is pretty awesome, it's probably what we're getting when we need it. I am mulling over something like a ski-rack type mount for the stock roof rack for when we don't.

Velcro. Zip ties leave marks and aren't reusable. :rtfm:

48" and it just barely fits. You also have to move all rear seats in unison or it snaps the ties. Once I have the third drawer done, I'll be storing the jack in it.

And really, this can only be considered a temporary solution. No matter how strong the ties are, they will break with enough bouncing around and you will suddenly have a 30# hunk of iron bouncing around in your cargo area, with one end shaped like a spear and the other like a bludgeon. It was fine for storage when I was just on roads, but I always put it on the roof rack when I was going somewhere bouncy.
 
I need to figure out where to put mine tout suite - going onto the beach tomorrow. In a pinch I am going to put it on the floor before the rear seats. Or get rubber bungee cords and strap it to the roof rack somehow, but I can see that ending badly.

I am tempted to mount the "hook" part of the velcro to a 12" square area next to the house door, and dress the little guy in the "loop" part of the cloth. That way, I can just stick him there while I lock or unlock the house door, you know, for safe keeping ;)

I might be selling my Loadwarrior + extension + shovel/axe mount + hi-lift mount soon if I decide to get the gobi. The hi-lift mount on it does wonders.

Roof rack. Pad for front and rear of the jack. Three of those big, foam covered wire ties. You're done.

Almost as easy as having the mounts.
 
I know I'm reviving an old thread, but thought people with 3rd row seats like me might benefit from a quick/cheap mod.

Cost was about $5 in parts:
2 3/8in bolts
2 3/8in lock nuts
couple of washers and wingnuts

It looks like its in there pretty tight which is good. I keep mine on the Gobi rack now, do not want to risk that thing flying around inside the cabin in the event of an accident.
 
I took some 2" flat stock and cut it to 4 equal lengths. Drilled out two holes in each piece. In two of pieces I drilled a hole in the center and welded in a u bolt (from the Tacoma after I installed the Dakar eat springs). I bent them slightly to form around the crossbars and have the Hi Lift mounted securely on the roof rack.

You can use something like a wheelmate if your rims will allow it, but you'll need to pack something to use for a jackstand as well. If you don't have hard rails or bumpers, I'd skip the hilift and get an exhaust jack.
 
hi lifting

I'm thinking you don't want to lift it by the nfab steps, not sure where else you can hook (other than using a wheel strap and jackstand and that is awkward)

I use this on my sliders

I would recommend making a lift with the jack in a nice safe place to make sure you know how things work.

Read a thread about Hi Lifts and stumble across a solution to dog hair in the cargo area. Life is sweet!

Makdad - how to you like the Canvasback Cargo Liner? I see its held in place with Velcro - is it sturdy enough?

Are you using the jackstand for doing on the trail repairs? I've lifted my TE using a Lift-Mate on the stock wheels enough to stack some rocks under the tire and get on my way. Just remember to chock the opposite tire for stability.
 
The liner is great. The velcro is very strong and I've never worried about it moving. To get rid of dog fur all you have to do is put the rear window down and drive. If it gets muddy just let the mud dry and sweep it out. Highly recommend it.
