Complete list of 22RE sensors
I'm compiling a complete list of 22RE sensors and such, for use with shooting troubles. This is everything I know from my own experience with '86 and '85 blocks, Fed/Canada emissions. What am I forgetting? What else is there on later 22RE and/or California blocks?
Throttle position sensor (TPS) (side of throttle body) 4Crawler.com TPS testing resource
Air flow meter (AFM/MAF) (on top of air filter housing) 4Crawler.com AFM testing resource
Thermostat (in water neck on top of motor)
ECU coolant temp sensor (front of motor under intake plenum, green plug) Youtube video with test procedure
Cold start timer switch (front of motor under intake plenum, brown plug) Youtube video with test procedure
Gauge coolant temp sensor (in lower intake plenum next to valve cover)
AC shutoff coolant temp sensor (in coolant neck/thermostat housing)
Knock sensor (side of block, passenger side)
Oil pressure sender (side of block, passenger side)
O2 sensor (early trucks have one in the manifold, later models have another downstream of the catalytic converter)
Idle air control valve (IACV) (underneath the lower intake plenum on early blocks, integrated with the throttle body on later blocks)

If you really wanna get cool with this you can make those into links for testing and troubleshooting each sensor.
That is if you wanna be one of the cool guys.

Got it, good catch.

Air flow meter, good call.
Is there an air intake temp on these trucks? I don't think that shows up until OBDII.
I thought about including these. The vacuum systems are so different from year to year and Fed/Canada to Cali trucks that it could be problematic listing them all. If you want to help me compile a list of vacuum switches and their locations, I'll be happy to add them to the OP.

I had to google that. What's that do, tell it exactly when to spark? I thought these trucks had pure mechanical/computer timing.

That's not a horrible idea, pat yourself on the back. I'll start linking my favorite youtube videos and 4crawler walkthroughs. Feel free to post up your own and I'll add them.

4Crawler says:
Quote:
You may find 1 or more temperature senders screwed into the neck of the thermostat housing. What do these dvarious senders do you might ask? Well, it all depends on what sort of setup your truck has.
If you have A/C, there is a thermo-switch in the housing that feeds the A/C Amplifier (behind the glove box). That switch is used to shut of the A/C compressor if the engine coolant temperature rises too high (to prevent overheating).
If you have an automatic transmission, you may have a sender there that feeds the ECT computer. It is used to sense engine temperature and lock out use of overdrive until the engine has reached it's normal operating temperature.
If you have a turbo-charged engine (22-RET), there may be a sender there that feeds into the main EFI ECU that is used to affect the turbo operation in case of engine overheating.
|
My truck with 5-speed and factory AC has just one sensor in the thermostat housing, which I believe is what is referenced as the AC shutoff temp sensor.
@ ChildrenOfBodom
, how many sensors does your turbo truck have in that housing? You guys with automatics and AC, how many sensors do you have there?

thermo housing sensors
Hi. I have an 86 22rte truck that has two sensors on the thermostat housing. I am currently rebuilding this engine. Both of those sensors were not hooked up when I purchased the truck so I'm sure everything was not operating properly. I suspect this may be why my A/C never worked. I'm currently trying to find out where these two sensors are wired in to. My harness has no connectors for them. The previous owner messed around quite a bit with it and probably cut them off. Does anyone know of a good wiring diagram that shows what pins on the harness connectors these go to?
Thanks.

So I just acquired an 88 4runner with a 22re mated to the 5speed, and I was curious if there were any "dangers" to running with my throttle body position sensor not hooked up? The previous owner said it was shot out, and I haven't yet tried the 4crawler steps since it seems to be running just fine with it unhooked. Just making sure I'm not causing any unknown damage if I drive it before I can go through the steps to properly adjust it or replace it.

I don't think it will even start, there are 4 separate "switches" on the tps that ties directly to the ecu, and if the ecu does not see them, it will probably not start at all.
Do a quick set of the tps if you must, here's how:
With the engine running and the tps loosened enough to turn by hand, rotate the tps till your idle drops, then turn it back VERY VERY SLOW, until the idle picks back up again. That is the exact spot where it is set correctly.
This shouldn't take you more than 10 or 15 minutes to do, and all you need is an angle philips screwdriver to loosen/tighten the tps on the throttle body.
Remember, the tps is extremely touchy, setting it properly is done in thousandths with a feeler gauge, so just a slight touch to it can throw it off by a lot.

Any chance there is a similar post for 3.0 v6 engines?

When I had my '86 with 22RE/auto, I had the TPS plug go bad and fall off the TPS. The auto trans shot to OD and stayed there unless I shifted manually, but the truck ran and I drove it for a couple days like that until I figured out what was wrong. I wouldn't want to make a habit of it, but besides being down on power and getting horrible gas mileage I can't think of any dangers to driving a five speed with a dead TPS.
