Nice, it that like purchasing a domain name before your webpage ideas are complete, or is it an investment. LOL

New to me: 87' T4R SR5

Thought I'd start a new thread for my newest project. Here's a quick run down. I sold my 86' 4runner that's in my signature (guess I should update that) It was a fun build, I will miss it, but that's why I picked up this 87' to help fill the empty void.

Here's a few pics of my last project: 86' T4R Deluxe:

^^^I sold my 86' after taking it from pretty much stock to what you see above, I had it for almost 4 years, my younger brother has it now, hopefully he has some fun with it!

Below are some pics of the 87' when I first picked it up about 4 mths ago for $1200. Its a SR5 with a 22re/5speed with 245,000 on the clock. It has awesome porn red interior, peeling clear coat, bent front and rear bumpers, bald tires and rusty passenger side rear quarter panel. Judging from all the hair and other "stuff" found inside, I believe it was used for a dog kennel at one time. On the plus side it runs like a champ (supposedly 80,000 on the motor, time will tell). The plan for this one is to build an expedition style rig, one that I can use for camping and is capable offroad but still dependable as a dd. I'm on the fence as whether or not this one will get a sas or not. My rational side says leave it IFS, but my compulsive side says do a SUA sas with a FJ60/62 front axel in the stock shackle upfront configuration. Not sure yet. Other plans include:

◆ New seats, change the interior color to grey
◆ Monsta-liner roll on bedliner for the exterior
◆ Build a bigger center console with cupholders
◆ Build a rear bumper with swing out spare tire carrier
◆ Build a safari rack
◆ Build a elevated platform in the rear with storage underneath
...im sure i will think and add more things down the road.

So first on the list was some new shoes. I picked up some BFG KO2 31x10.50R15's and five SR5 Alloy wheels.(I still need to get a 5th tire matching tire for my spare wheel).

Hey Rob! Yeah I was a little bored today anyway, so I figured what the heck!

I did the Zuk mod using some Jeep TJ front coils, I cut them down aprox 5" and made them about 12" long, just to get rid of the sag and bring the back up level. I also installed my old Rancho shocks left over from my 86' T4R. They have aprox 2" more travel than the stock ones.

Here's a few pics after the install. I was pretty impressed with the ride, and they still flex decently.

I removed all the chrome fender well moulding, and chrome side trim, also the rock chip protectors in front of the rear wheel wells so I see how bad the rust really is. Surprisingly it's almost all on the passenger side lower quarter panel behind the wheelwell opening. The driverside looks great, I even opened the rear access panel on the inside and checked using a flash light, no signs of rust on the driverside.

I replaced the bent up front bumper with a cheap black one off ebay, looks good for now, I will eventually paint the grille and headlight bezels black to match, also removed the smashed front valance and added another tow hook to the driverside.

Before and after:

And all washed up!

I was driving home from work one night and there was a tree blown down across our driveway blocking part of the road. I slowly drove around and ran over some small tree limbs, no big deal. Somehow one of them found its way to the radiator!

So I replaced it with an all aluminum Koyo Racing radiator and cap. Went ahead and replaced the thermostat with a Toyota 2 stage thermostat while I was at it.

^^^I really need to clean up that engine bay!!!

Seats

I picked up some seats off Craigslist. The old ones were pretty thrashed, passenger side bucket wouldn't lean forward or recline correctly, plus I needed some motivation to change my interior over from red to grey. I got a set of 2006 Honda CRV buckets and a 98' Dodge durango middle split bench seat for $200 total.

^^^Woohoo, the kids get cupholders!!!

Nice progress. Where did you get the Koyo radiator? I only see them for 3.0's.

Thanks Nervo. I got the Koyo radiator off of ebay. It's listed as fitting 84-88' 4runners and 84-95' pickups with a 22R/RE. I paid $295.00 with free shipping, but had to buy the cap seperatly, that was another $26.95...here's a link to ebay:

Ha, ha, yeah the red has got to go!

I got the front seats mounted, so the new grey is on the way, lol.The front Honda CRV buckets had some extra brackets bolted to them that added additional unwanted height to the seat, so I removed the extra bracket, you can see the height difference in the post #10 above.

^^^Here's the extra bracket I had to remove

^^^What I ended up doing was grinding the rivets off the bottom of my original seat sliders and removing the "feet" that bolt to the floor. With the seat already out I bolted the feet back down to the floor then tack welded some 1-1/2" wide by 1/8" thick flat bar stock across. Now I can center the seats where ever they need to be and bolt the new Honda seat slider to the flat bar. This way the new seats bolted right up in the stock mounting holes.

^^Nice job! Do you have similar head room as the original seats after removing that extra bracket? Or still a little higher than stock?
