2010 Mercedes G brochure: http://www.mercedes-benz.nl/content/..._W463_MY10.pdf

Cool fact (for me): "Up to 4-mm thick in places, the G-class frame is held together by more than 6400 weld spots. As well as that, it is surface-treated and waxed. The vehicle underfloor, meanwhile, has an additional plastic coating."

Ok, torsional rigidity is tough to manage with frame rails that close together, period. I have to say hats off to the overall package though. I am sure the rigidity is adequate and I love the exhaust and nothing hanging low... The rear links could use some skids but so could everything else on the market...

I don't think that i have ever heard of cracked fenders on the G! The frame steel thickness is superior to even that of the Land Cruiser (4 mm vs. 3.2 mm)! The six crossmembers are thick tubes in itself...and they are welded through BOTH sides of the frame. (Ford makes a big deal about this welding process...and they only do it on a few of the crossmembers...here, all 6 crossmembers are welded this way.) Every part of the frame is then dipped in primer and covered in thick wax for rust protection. This partly why the G500 weighs MORE than a Land Cruiser 100 despite having the same dimension as a 3rd gen 4runner.

Actually, if you look carefully, the control arm links are attached to the SIDES of the frame, not underneath the frame like in Toyota (and other manufacturer's) trucks. Therefore, control arm skids are not needed at all! In fact, even where the control arms attach to the side of the frame, there is a small metal covering to protect the actual attachment point! Actually, most of the attachment points underneath are hidden behind a metal plate.

In addition, the control arms (or radius arms) are forged solid steel...so, it is gonna hard to bend those things...you probably destroy the bushings and attachments before you bend those!

In the pics below, you can see arrangements of the crossmembers...2nd pic of the actual thickness of the crossmember (front)...and in the 3rd pic, the actual underbody shot of my G500 and you can see where the control arms attach to the side of the frame...and finally, you gotta have a strong frame to be able to handle these extra "options"....

i work with g-wagons a lot since i serve in the Canadian army. it takes a special course to drive it due to the complicted diff system and all those damn buttons. they are awesome cars. i don't really like the turbo diesel in it and its electro-limited to 120 KM/H in our versions. the turbo diesel is fine normally.once you add on the armour package the car starts to get real sloppy. with the armour package, each door is a whopping 220 pounds plus all the belly plates and side armour. they are usually used as "gun trucks", providing mobile machine gun support for dismounted troops while the big guns whack the hard targets.
in afghanistan if you parked the car on a uphill slant during a patrol the door wouldnt open because its too heavy, and if you parked facing down hill the damn doors won't close. we no longer use them "outside the wire" because they don't fare well with IED's.
so far, other than IED's the g-wagon has proved to be a valuable asset. i was driving a GMC MIL-verado on a mud road when it suddenly swerved and went into the ditch. it was in such deep mud the driver door wouldnt open. i radioed for help and 2 minutes later a g-wagon driven by a Sgt. showed up. the first thought i had was, no f'ckin' way that thing will drag this out. well, the g-wagon proved to be a torque monster. it was slipping side to side like a pendulum but in less than 5 mintes the stuck truck was free.

i wouldn't mind one of those open top special forces vehicles as a summer car lol. with the mk. 19 and MG3 on it of course.
