Angry '04 6 CD Changer: Error 3

So I'm curising along listening to the radio and decide that I want to listen to the CD's in the player. I switch over and I get "Error 3" blinking on the head unit. What the heck!!!!

Specs on my CD changer:
  • Is a 6 disc in dash changer; is not aftermarket; bought with the truck from the dealer lot
  • The unit is in a 2004 V8 Limited 4Runner
  • I have never tried to take the head unit out of the dash
  • The CD changer is/was fully loaded with 6 discs when this error occurred
  • The CD changer was working fine the day before because I was listening to a CD
  • Most if not all the CD's in the changer are burned CD's
  • Looked at the users manual for "error 3" and it says that CD's are misaligned or something of the sort. The solution according to the manual is to eject the CD's and re-insert them. Problem is that I can't eject/play or do anything with the CD's because all I getis the flashing "error 3" on the display.

What do I do? The vehicle is still under warranty. Should I take it back to the dealer? Is this something I can fix myself? Should I simply disconnect the battery to see if the error goes away?

TIA!!!!

I think someone on here received a 6disc scion unit that had that same error. I'm not sure you have any other option than taking it into the dealership, especially if you have it under warranty.

You can try unplugging the battery for about 15minutes to reset it, but who knows if that will do any good. Probably worth a shot though. good luck.

4Runner.org thread referring to the :
Lexus Forum Error 3 Fix

I'm a bit leary of the "turn it on upside down and shake it".

Uhhh, yeah I'd be too. I'd try to get a total replacement out of it

Okay, so I actually feel a little better that I'm not the only one with this problem. I had this happen to me about a month ago on a very similar car: 2004 V8 Limited with the 6 disk in dash JBL changer. I don

frankeyss, you said you ordered a nav system. Did you have to pay full price or did you pay the difference between the regular radio and the nav system?

Thanks!
Sorry for the confusion, but I had ordered another radio right around the time this one died from oemvalue. (Ordered the solara nav system).

if it's still under warranty take it back to the dealer...the same thing happened to me about 6 months after having my '03 4runner, but after a day all of the cd's would eject, but they wouldn't play...toyota replaced my 6 disc in dash changer for free...there is something int he owner's manual warning about using burned cd's though...just an fyi...

What a coincidence? I posted this sometime last week and on Friday I got the dreaded ERROR 3 msg while driving home from work...This time none of my CD's would eject! I brought it Toyota today to see if it would still be covered under warranty (I have 37k miles on my '03 Limited)...The service consultant said that they'd take a look and see what they can do...I got a phone call this afternoon that said they couldn't salvage any of the CD's but will replace the 6 disc HU as a good will gesture even though i'm past my warranty period of 36k miles! Just another reason why I've only driven Toyotas and I'm sticking with Toyota for awhile...It'll take 3 to 5 days to order a new HU, but it's free so I'm not complaining...I can't believe I'm going to be on my 3rd HU...
