replacing power steering belt

My belt broke off of my 93 4 runner and I bought another one but cannot figure out how to put it back on, plus it looks like another belt is missing not sure what that is, does anyone have any pictures of how the belt goes back on, I would appreciate your help.

Not sure for your '93, but I assume it's similar to my 2002. There is a tensionner bolt on the ps pump assembly that you loosen (it moves the ps pump and pully closer to the engine. You then slip on the new belt, and re-tighten the tensionner bolt until you reach the required tension on the belt. Depending on how your engine is set up, you may have to remove other belts (i.e. Alternator or A/C belts) to re-install the ps pump belt.

For your "missing" belt, does your truck have A/C? If not, there would be an unused pulley on the engine.

Yes it has AC so I don't know what that is

Do you have any decent pics of the extra/un-used pulley? (Not a close-up showing only the pulley, but a picture of the pulley and general area around it?)

iWell I guess it is for the AC does anyone have a picture of how this is suppose to go on?

I'm not sure whether you have a 4cyl engine or the 3.0L V6, but you might be able to find your answer here.

Its a V6 automatic

Its a v6 automatic, I looked through what you sent but I don't see anything on belts

I don't have first hand experience working on your engine, but by flipping through the pages on that site, I found (on the "Engine Mechanical -- Cylinder Block" page) that the re-installation order for your belts is:

1. Install Alternator Belt
2. Install A/C Belt
3. Install P/S Belt

So, the good news is you don't have to take off your Alternator belt to re-install the other two.

Since your "missing" belt was the A/C belt, you can re-install that one first. Find your A/C compressor. Look at the A/C compressor pulley, and find the pulley on the front of the engine that lines up with it (one will line up with the A/C pulley and one will line up with the P/S pulley). Figure out how to loosen the A/C belt (on my engine, there is a pivot bolt and tensionner on the A/C compressor assembly. On your engine, I think there is an idler pulley to tighten the belt. If that is the case, back off the idler pulley so that you can slip the belt over the A/C pulley, the idler pulley and the correct drive pulley on the engine. Install the belt, then tighten the idler pulley until the belt tension is correct (you can get a tool that measures belt tension. I'm not sure what the correct tension is for your engine... call the dealer to get that?)

You can then re-install your P/S belt. Find your P/S pump. Ensure that the P/S pump pulley lines up with the only unused pulley on the front of the engine. Figure out how to loosen the P/S belt (on my engine, there is a pivot bolt and tensionner on the P/S pump assembly. I suspect you might have the same. If that is the case, loosen the pivot bolt, and loosen the tensionner bolt to move both pulleys closer together so that you can slip the belt over both the P/S pulley and the drive pulley on the engine. Install the belt, then tighten the tensionner bolt until the belt tension is correct (you can get a tool that measures belt tension. I'm not sure what the correct tension is for your engine... call the dealer to get that?) Re-thighten the pivot bolt.

You're done.

PS. There are a few diagrams of the components in the link above. Look under "Steering" - "Power steering pump" and "Air conditionning" - "Compressor".

Good luck. Keep asking questions if you get stuck.

Bridgette,

Any update on this? Were you able to replace your belts?

vaneck34 05-24-2006 05:30 PM

my sons truck

Its my sons truck he got the PS one back on thank you, but he hasn't bought a AC belt yet, I am just afraid since theres not one on it that the compresser is going to be froze up thats why it doesn't have one on it, but you guys are great, thank you everyone for all your comments. When he does get this done I will write and let you know of the outcome
