5th Gen Engine Air Filter Question

I bought this Filter off ebay and noticed it was a hair different. The part # of the my original is 17801-38051 new part # 17801-yzz13

The Toyota dealer I bought it from says Toyota quit making the 38051 and this is new updated part #. It's the same of everything except the charcoal filter thing isn't present. I can still get the same exact old one if need be, just curious if anyone has ran into this same problem.

Yep, that is what you get when order one in North America. It works fine. I get Charcoal type from local dealer.

I just ordered one off Amazon, part number 17801-38051 was delivered. Maybe they are moving through old stock?

Not sure, I like the one with the charcoal filter thing so I'm going to buy like 5 of them to have them.

Can those of you who refer to the engine air filter "with charcoal" explain to me what this does for the engine?

I know some CABIN air filters use charcoal impregnated material to absorb odors from the air entering the cabin or the cabin air itself when the blower is set to recirculate.

Why would this be needed for an ENGINE air filter? I thought the main purpose of the ENGINE air filter was to remove intake air particulates, not to remove odors from the intake air. Am I wrong?

I assume it's the same function as the non-removable filter on the gen 4. Keeps volatile organic fumes from escaping the intake after the engine has been turned off. Emissions stuff.

I believe that is a charcoal canister which is part of the emission control system and is a completely different and separate system....It has nothing to do with the air filter for the engine air intake.

Engine air intake filter does one thing==filter particulates from air entering the air intake.

I'm not talking about the evap. system; I'm referring to the permanent charcoal filter which sits directly above the air filter. It's a 4th gen thing, but seems to serve the same function as the filter described in this thread.

It's interesting that they discontinued this filter for the 5th gens. I wonder if the emission regulations changed?

Thank you for the link! I like how they removed the charcoal part to improve air flow... some design Emissions Control engineer probably had a heart attack if they saw that thread.

Also, thanks for your patience explaining this thing. I went from a 1st gen 4Runner that I drove for 32 years to a 5th gen in 2016 so I missed several generations of changes!

Thanks again!

Amazon still sells 38051.

I've never seen an engine air filter with carbon, just white pre-filters for cold climes. Learn something new every day.

I think the manual recommends every 20k miles. Would be more frequent in dirty/dusty environments.

I think the 5th gens have that extra filter/ screen in the stock airbox. I'd have to check, but I thought I remember seeing it while doing the TRD airbox swap. The TRD airbox has a more open screen I believe.
