Kinda vagabond. RNs can basically get a position anywhere so I have found myself in the Navajo L.A. Minnesota and points east and west. Raised my kids in the SF bay area.

Do you expect to stay in Alaska long term?
When I was younger I lived in Wasilla for a few months...

How do the studded tires compare to studless (but true winter) tires on snow and ice-free pavement? Is there any drawback?

On days when the road is free of snow it is still surprisingly icy at the temperatures we have here. that said running in 2WD an option and the Nokians do well, noisy and the drawback is obvious that you eat your studs.

This tire IMO is good choice for a location where you are going to get snow for several months at least and you have to be ready. I ran Pirelli Scorpion ATR in Anchorage last year. They performed well, but nowhere near the competence of the Nokians. The Hakka's simply adhere to pavement.

Next test will be when the sun comes out in a few days, thinks cool down and ice is on the roads. I got these, as the Scorpions like most AT tires don't do ice as well as studs I have heard.

Called the dealer. He will take a look at them and adjust if needed. thanks for watching my back...........good to know. by the way as predicted rain came turned the snow to ice and the Hakka's did great. 80% better than the Scorpions on the real slick glass ice.

This post did not appear on the site but I am cut/pasteing it on.....?

Alaskaman, your right front tire is rotating the wrong direction. See those arrows on the sidewall. The Hak 5 is a directional tire and only gets its best traction turning in that direction. Your left front is correct. I can't see your back tires in the pictures. If you're lucky, your left rear is going in the wrong direction too and you can just switch your left rear with the right front. If not, the dealer should switch the tire on the rim and rebalance it for free because it's their mistake. Look at both back tires. They may have mounted all 4 the same way on the rims. Hak 5's must have 2 mounted one way on the rims and the other 2 the opposite way on the rims. Rotating the wrong way probably won't affect wear, just traction. In deep snow, your left side will be pulling better than the right side. Could cause a spin out I suppose. Unlikely though with those tires. On ice should be almost equal because of the studs. Although Hak 5 studs are supposedly pointed in the direction it's rotating. I can't confirm that. Either way it's better to get it going in the right direction.

Talked with the dealer Anthony and he tells me that all 4 tires need to be directional in the same direction. the arrows on the 2 front tires and the 2 rear tires are all going in the same direction. not sure what you are seeing on the right front which you said was not mounted correctly?? as to mounting he says no. do you have any links to support your information? Appreciated.

I saw his post, and by the time I replied to it, it was gone. He must have realized he was mistaken and deleted his post. I deleted my reply when I saw his post was gone. When I looked at your pics the tires looked fine.

I know what he means though. Some tires should only rotate in one direction because of their tread pattern. Yours might be like that, but they look correct.

Ok I was thinking I was getting older and having a senior moment. that explains it...........i got a little irritated as it made no sense. It's 39 here today with a huge snow/rain storm. roads are closed all over and the Hakka's did fine. esp on the ice.........I thoroughly confused the dealer. Anthony what are you smoking over there son?

Poor guy, it was his first post too. At least he was quick enough to catch his mistake.
