Toyo 265/70/17 Open Country H/T's installed
Well after a few too many trips to the tire store out of frustration I bit at their offer to swap out tires for me.
I was given a list of replacements. (It's a GY store.) The first choice and the one they were pushing was the GY Wrangler SR-A. I was assured it's not the SR-A of 'yesterday' but I couldn't believe it. The only attractive thing about that tire was the fact I could've had the 255/75. Of the other other offerings Toyo's were offered but the 255 sizes are expensive and rare compared to the 265/70/17.
I opted for the P265/70/17 H/T. So far it's amazingly smooth. They balanced easily and with little weight. They're exceptionally quiet and good in the rain. From reading on treaddepot.com they might even work in light snow too.
Compared with the GY's they're positively wimpy. I am quite sure I could gash a sidewall in a heartbeat.
Overall I am happy and provided it's not terribly scary in the few snows we get, it stays in balance and the MPG stays good I'll be happy enough.
I think this tire will prove to be an awesome alternative to the now defunct Cross-Terrain. So far it seems that will be case, boring as hell and tough to beat
Pics and more updates soon...

Do you like the look of the 256/70 vs 255/75? I'm also thinking of 245/75

I didn't focus on the 255/70 option. I really wanted to be as close to 32" as possible. I did look at the 245/75 size and I seriously considered the 235/80's even though they are E tires. I have used E tires on light vehicles before. I understand the drawbacks but would've been willing. Unfortunately I ran the GY's too long for a free swap. I wanted them to work. The store was really bending over backwards to get me out the door for little additional money. What that meant was they were having to get 'approval' from outside the store and my options were somewhat limited. The fact I got Toyo's from the GY store was big. They were done 'screwing around with me' and wanted me to driving, satisfied but out of their hair. More than a few have tried E's and brought them back. They feared the 255/75 (or so they said) because of the hard-to-get aspect and I didn't want to pay; as I said they did me right on the 265/70's.
Overall I am satisfied and kudos to the shop. I ran the GY's since December.
I do hear you loud and clear though... 1st choice would've been having the GY's work for me. 2nd would've been Toyo A/T in 255/75 or the 235/80 and 245/75 was close behind.

They get better MPG, work better when hitting deep puddles, work better in the snow and arguably they're better off-road. I was able to run the GYSA with no mpg penalty, great performance (except for shaking) etc. That's pretty amazing considering I went from a Michelin Cross Terrain at 30.5" to a full 32.1" tire with a much more aggressive tread. Now, tall-skinnies will not have quite as good ultimate, dry pavement stick because they have slightly less rubber on the road but I don't drive my T4R like that. I'd much rather have good foul weather performance, mpg etc. I will also look at the 255/70's thank you. With your lift I don't know that 31.1" tire would be my first choice, I'd strive to get closer to 32". Personally I'd opt for a 245/75 before I did the 255/70.

This is a good article on tall-skinny: http://www.expeditionswest.com/resea...tion_rev1.html

The Open Country H/T's are just fine in snow of any depth you'll run into on most roads. I wouldn't worry at all. I had a set at one point and they did surprisingly well in both snow and ice. Never a problem that I can recall. I never got stuck and never had any difficulties. I was doing a lot of highway driving each day (like 2 hours of commuting per day) and went with an H/T and felt like it did a really nice job. This was on a Pathfinder however. It's still the same tire though no matter what vehicle you put it on.

Good news! I'm sure I'll do well enough for the little bit of snow/ice that I have to deal with. Thanks

I'll get some more pics this weekend.
I am up to a few thousand miles now.
-The little nubs are still there! I am very surprised by that.
-They are holding balance well.
-They ride VERY smoothly over little seams in the pavement on gravel driveways etc.
-They are VERY quiet. No obnoxious, premature squealing if you get a bit too aggressive.
-The performance in the rain is great! No complaints at all. They clear the water very well. This, the fact the nubs are still there and the dry-pavement traction/lack of 'easy squeal' characteristics lead me to believe they have a pretty high-tech, good rubber compound.
-Overall I would highly recommend this tire (so far) if your primary mission is on road and 265/70 is your preference.
The only thing I have noticed traction wise compared with the GYSA's is wet grass. I have to be much gentler with gas pedal, go figure... They actually stick to fairly dry dirt surfaces pretty well.
My preference would be this tire in the 255/75 size. I like the looks and drive of a taller narrower tire. They don't make it though. I must say that's my preference though; truthfully these Toyo H/T's are awesome tires for 80% (or 90%) of all 4Runners out there.
My MPG has gone down about .5 from the GYSA's which is pretty amazing considering how much lighter and how much more easy-rolling/less-aggressive these tires are compared with the GYSA's. I'm still ahead of the Michelin C/T's mpg wise so I'm happy.
Hindsight being 20/20 I would have done one of 2 things: Sanded the rims in spite of being told that was a no-no and kept the GY's. Or pushed harder and convinced the store to order some Toyo A/T's in 255/75 but that's only because of my lust for a 255/75/17. If hindsight was better than 20/20 I would have coughed up for the RevoII's in 255/75.
02SE, I babbled as if all 4Runners were only mildly lifted and had 17" rims. If you're running 16's then disregard all my 255/75 babble and go get a set. They are great!

I'm looking forward to any pics you have of them on the 4Runner. I'm trying to decide between the LTX M/S2's and the Toyo HT's. I ran the original LTX M/S tires for 70,000 miles, and they did very well everywhere but mud. I try to avoid mud anyway. Since the all-season tread will work fine for most of my driving needs, including the wheeling I do, it's come down to those two.
Thanks for the insight into the 255/75 size, but I don't have 17" wheels. LT265/75R16, is what I've always run on the 4Runner, and I plan to continue with that size.

Not the best pics but you get the idea... To me they just look quiet, good in the rain and possibly ok in the snow (due to siping). The siping goes to the very deep, almost all the way. I'm pretty sure it goes to the treadwear bar.
Now that I have driven them a bit I'd say my wild guess based on the looks is pretty close I suspect they'll wear well too and not have any problem making Toyo's 60k claim.

Thanks for the pics. I can look at pics on the manufacturers website, but it really helps to see them on a vehicle.
Now to decide between the two.

FWIW mine came with Michelin CT's as the OE. I don't feel that this is any less of a tire that the original CT. It lacks the Blingy name brand in some circles, in other circles the Toyo is recognized as a premium tire, particularly their truck tires and high end sport tires.
If I were making your choice, having driven on both, I would choose based on cost which means the Toyo's would likely be the winner.
My friend has a Honda Ridgeline. He recently installed the LTX M/S2 and those are very nice but noisier than these Toyo's. They don't seem to ride better (or worse) than my Toyo's. If I was choosing between the LTX M/S2 and the Toyo I'd still pick the Toyo unless I drove in a lot of snow. I suspect (total guess on my part) that the LTX M/S2 will outrun the Toyo HT's in the snow. The Michelin may last a bit longer but I don't like running any tire over about 65k regardless of tread. The rubber seems to get hard and they don't ride so good. Just my 2cents.
I studied the Michelin Latitude Tour. I'm pretty sure the old Cross-Terrain was a better, much better tire. Lots of mixed reviews on the Latitude Tour. The Toyo's and the LTX M/S2 reviews are all pretty positive.

I am still looking for tires before winter. Little snow and ice, mostly highway and city. This winter I had an emergency run over 4000' Pass and found myself in the worse snow of my life. Good Interstate 5 roads, so I was confident. Have not looked yet, is Toyo 255/75/17? Stock is fine also, stock suspention so far.
