| New tires installed...Hankook Dynapro ATM After much debate and too many hours researching tires I finally made a decision and got the P265/70/17 Dynapro ATMs installed yesterday. Got them for $620 OTD at a local Discount Tire. I feel like I got a great deal and am extremely happy with them.
WARNING: Below are my thoughts, impressions, and general ramblings so skip ahead to the pics if you want. It is long but just want to help out anyone else obsessing over tire choices.
I decided to go with the ATM based on their excellent reviews online. My decision was made for the following reasons: 1)These tires are fairly light-37lbs 2)Great tread life with a 50k mile warranty 2)Awesome in dirt, snow, and rain due to the generous, deep siping 4)Fairly quite on road despite aggressive tread design. 5)Although extremely popular online, I never see them around my area so the "different" factor was also attractive.
I have only driven 100 miles on these so far. However, I can add the following:
- Road Noise: These tires are very quite on the road and seem to live up to the reviews I've read online. True, these tires are new and will get louder but i see no reason the tires will howl as some all terrains do. Which brings me to the only "negative" I've found online...they get noticeably louder at around 20k miles. This seems to be due to the staggered lug structure (rock ejectors??) causing the lugs to get larger as they wear.
The only time I could even try to hear any noise, and this was really trying, was at very slow speeds such as decelerating for lights, taking off, etc.
- Rock Retention: They seem to pick up less small rocks than other similarly designed all terrains. I went down a gravel road with lots of small rocks and only heard one or two loud pings from thrown rocks. This is not a big deal but still an added bonus.
- Appearance: I will admit, I was worried that these tires wouldn't be aggressive enough in person. The only ATMs I've seen in person where on much larger sizes. IMO, tires always look better in bigger sizes. My main area was the lag of gap between the outer lugs as this is the side most visible. However, I was pleasantly surprised when they were installed. The outer "flame"(or whatever you want to call them) side lugs really add to the look. I was worried these would look cheesy in person, but again, no issue there.
The only "complaint" I have is the tires tread appears to be noticeably narrower than the widest parts of the side walls if that makes any sense. They are a little less "square" relative to their total size. Make no mistake, these are very aggressive and are in no way rounded on the outer lugs, the tread itself just seems a little smaller in width compared to other ATs i've looked at (Terra Grapplers, Falken Wild Country, BFG AT, etc)
- Responsiveness: I realize this is fairly subjective but I was sure to make a mental note this week while driving my older, more street friendly tire's mannerisms in order to make an accurate comparison. From what I can tell so far, these tires feel just as much if not slightly more responsive on quick turns. I did not experience any tire roll when turning. But then again, I don't drive the 4runner like a race car either so all is well here.
Discount Tire aired them up to 32 but I had them bump it up to 37 psi as I like the stiffer sidewall feel.
- MPG: Again, I realize that I have only driven 100 miles and have no were near the required data to make a 100% sure assessment. However, I know how my tires did given my driving style and these did just as well on the way home. This including city and highway miles. I don't think I will lose any MPG despite their tread design because my previous 265/70 were noticeably wider than these tires and a hair shorter.
Now on to what you've all came here to see...the pictures! Again, I have taken several(aka too many. lol) pics as I'm always wanting more when I'm looking at tires. Enjoy

| I agree with mosteverything you said. I've had the same tires now for almost 20k miles and really haven't noticed them getting any louder. Looks good! |

| I was waiting to here from you ARK. Your thread was one of the main ones I looked at when considering these tires.
The comment about the ~20k mark getting louder was purely based on what I've read...and we all know how accurate things we read on the internet may/may not be. lol. That's even better though if you aren't noticing that. I love these tires! I've already got several compliments on them at the gas station.
How is your tread holding up? I'm hoping I can get around 45-50k on my set. Based on all the positive reviews, I think that's a reasonable goal.

| So far so good. I do a five tire rotation every 7-8k miles and if I were to guess I'll hit 50k easy on these. I don't know exact mileage, it's between 15k-20k right now and I can't tell that they've wore much at all. |

| I have these tires also and LOVE them. I have about 2500 miles on them so far and they are worth every penny and then some. I orginally wanted Duratracs, but couldn't justify the extra money. I'm glad I didn't cause these tires have exceeded every one of my expectations. I paid $700 out the door from a local shop, Discount wanted $850. I plan on buying the spare thru the same shop. 5 from them will be cheaper than 4 from Discount. Its funny how prices can vary that much depending on your location.

Ha so I'm actually contributing to the problem. Quote:

Great looking tire.
And the $620 was only due to me finding it cheaper on Discount Tire Direct's Ebay store and then getting them to price match. It would have been ~$700 OTD for me too otherwise.

| Thanks man. We'll have to meet up next time i'm in town.
As for the lift, I'm debating between the DS 2.5/1.5 and Bilstein 5100/rear spacer. I'm kinda leaning toward the DS for economical reasons. Ha

| Any updates on these? I'm thinking of getting a set of them in 265/65R17 for my 01 2wd 4runner. |

They are doing great! I already have over 5k miles on them and can't really see any noticeable wear. I actually had a chance to test their stopping ability on the interstate a few weeks ago from 80 to 0 (18 wheeler's tire blew out in middle lane) and they were great. They did bark a little but any tire would under those conditions. I never felt like they were out of control. Also, I am going to rotate them at my next oil change and will measure the tread depth for a more accurate report. I would recommend them to anyone looking for an AT.

| I'm still very pleased with mine as well. They seem to do great with everything I've used them for. I haven't pushed them off road, but they handled what little I've thrown at them easily. My only complaint is that they do get louder with mileage. If I have the windows down or radio off, you can hear them, especially when slowing down. It's not obnoxious or anything, but just a noticeable hum. I don't know my exact mileage, ~25k I think. They are wearing excellent from what I can tell (haven't actually measured). |

| I have about 17k on my dynapros. So far they have been great. They balance good, pretty good in the snow, and they are quiet. As for the hum, yes it is there, barely if you have the radio off, windows down, and holding your breath you can hear it. I haven't measured tread depth but I think I can barely start to see some tread wear. I would buy them again.

How much snow do you get in NM? I'm thinking about getting the same tires for 08 4Runner SR5. We're expecting plenty of snow in Colorado Springs, CO.
Thanks! |
