Which 4runner Powertrain Do You Have?

Hey all,

It seems like most people on this forum have 4wd 4runners. However, on the streets and at local dealerships, I see 2wd 4runners much more than 4wd. And i see V6 more than V8. In fact, in Texas, it's rare to see 4wd 4runners. I have always thought that this is due to me living in the South...less demand for 4wd vehicles due to less severe weather.

For fun, i want to see the makeup of this forum.

Thanks.

In New Jersey, I have never seen a 4X2 4th generation 4Runner on the road. The dealers don't even stock them here.

We don't see many 4WD models here in So Cal either. There are some, but not a lot. The V6 to V8 mix seems to be about 3 V6's for every 2 V8's based on my observations.

v6 2WD

2004 sr5 V6 2WD. Sometimes i wish i had 4wd, but i threw some 275/70R16's on it, and hopefully will get a leveling kit for it......just add a little air to the front end. (I gotta fit in ya know)

Here in Northern California, the V6 market is greater than the V8 market for sure. That is because of the gas prices and the political climate of the area. As far as 4WD vs. 2WD, we do have our fair share of 4WD users (mostly from families wanting a vehicle for ski trips), but the majority is probably 2WD. I decided against the "typically" equipped versions for my region and have a Sport Edition 4WD V8. I just can't pass up horsepower or technical capabiliity if it's available!

I think most ppl on t4r.org have 4th gens. And most people go for the v8, because of resale value? longevity? more power? I know I did for the previous reasons. Hopefully I was right. ;)

It's interesting...so far (after 21 votes), there are far more 4wd V8 owners than anyone else. It just proves that internet forums do not always reflect real life.

So, i guess that 4wd V8 owners are internet computer geeks! And i am the granddaddy of them all!

Interesting stats so far....

When I was shopping for my 4runner up north I did not even see any 4x2's.

Down in sunny south florida most of the 4th gens I have seen are 4x2's. Come to think of it. I think I've only seen one other 4x4 4th gen on the road. When I moved here I saw vehicles everywhere I have rarely seen in 4x2s up north.

I used to live in Denver and it's hard to find any 2wd models there. Not that anyone in that area would want a 2wd suv/truck. A 2wd defeats the purpose of these vehicles in areas where weather plays a major role in their lives. Whenever someone in the sunbelt area moves to foul weather area, they get almost nothing for their 2wd suv trade-in because the dealers can't move them.

I live in the L.A. area now and it's the complete opposite. lol

Few in sun-belt areas want a 4wd model because:
1. They cost more. (initial cost, maintenance, insurance, fuel, etc.)
2. They aren't many 4wd models available in this area. It's not hard to find, but the combination of color and option that you want might be hard to find. Just like my '04 sport edition in v8 4wd and sunroof was a hard find when I bought it 2 years ago.

Everybody knows that 4runners were meant to be 4wd from the beginning. Marketing got it's way with the 2wds... I think.

Just my 2cents worth.

Have a great day!

During the buying process I could not get a definitive answer on if the v6 was able to run full time or not. I even called toyota who told me "part time only". Most people just didn't know with 100% certainty. Even many reviews say 'part time' which I interpret as not able to run 4x4 on dry pavement.

I was set on the v8 for the full time, and throaty growl. In my area it was impossible to get a v8 (or any limited runner for that matter). So when this one came up, I decided that I could live with the v6 even if it was a part time system. Imagine my surprise and exicitment when I read the manual!

The v8s I looked at (mostly out of province via the net) were the same price as the v6, the only jump was sr5/sport to the limited.

I do tow a trailer, but it isn't that big. I do wonder if I will need the torque of the 8 towing it thru the last segment to my cottage. My previous vehicle could not complete the last segment with the trailer attached (probably the fault of the 4x4 system, overall towing capacity of the prev truck was 5600lbs). Enter a partial cross axle situation and pop a trailer load on the back - it gets impassable quick!

I blab too much.
