I think it is a matter of longevity - the older they get, the fewer the number. I bought an 85 off the showroom floor, it was my first and I loved it. Have an 02 now, but many times I wish I still had my cream yellow 85 sitting in my drive-way.

This is a waste, everyone knows the 1st gens are the best. For the removeable top if nothing else.

I like the 3er gen's but lately im watching some 4th gen,s sweet
im starting to see the good things of the 4th gens and they seems lighter that my 3er gen. even so the 4th seem more plastic and fiber fenders and bumpers but they starting to like me, that doesnt make me think that now I dont like my 4runner but they are nice too ;) maybe if I find some good price for a 4th gen (maybe 2004) i get it.. my final words are EVEN SO 3ER GEN STILL ARE THE BEST AND RECOGNIZED.. btw why the 99 is more popular? somebody knows?
