Went to do a complete brake job on my rig, and low and behold I got bit by the Frozen Caliper bug! Damn it! Was still able to replace the rotors in the front and the whole system in the rear. I dont have time to replace the calipers myself so I dropped it off at my local guy to replace them. Still not bad considering that I have 84K miles on it. What really sucks though is that my extended warranty ran out only 8,000 miles ago! SO CLOSE!

Yea I am driving around on my second frozen caliper. I have been for at a year now. It is on my low priority list. It is basically my only gripe about the vehicle.

Just had the calipers replaced by my local shop for $650 after tax. Aftermarket calipers were used so hopefully they last longer. My truck finally stops again!!!

Periodic flushing of the brake system will help prevent frozen calipers.

It may help, but I had a frozen caliper and I flush the brake system every second year. I'm thinking the moisture finds its way externally through the seal.

Yeah, I am convinced it is a design flaw with the 4th gen calipers. I almost wish they used floating calipers in the front like they do in the rear.

what does a frozen caliper feel like? Is this happening when people change their own brakes or is it just randomly happening? My LTD just turned 70....youse guise have me worried!

what does a frozen caliper feel like? You may or may not feel it. If you feel it you may experience a pull under hard stops or it may feel as if a brake is dragging. Is this happening when people change their own brakes or is it just randomly happening? Randomly. It's most frequently discovered when you try to change the brake pads (DIY or a shop). You're unable to push the piston back into the caliper. You'll also (probably) note very uneven pad wear even before you try to push the piston back into the caliper. It's usually one or two of the 4 pistons per front caliper. It can happen on the rear calipers but that seems very rare. I don't think I can recall of anyone here posting about a stuck rear caliper on a 4th gen. My LTD just turned 70....youse guise have me worried!

I had my left front brake caliper seize in 2009 at 130,000 km. I could smell something burning under the front of my T4R, and upon investigating found the left front wheel extremely hot to the touch. Brake pads were toast, but rotors were salvageable. Expensive repair.

Now in 2011 at 141,000 km the right front caliper has seized. This time it was not noticed until I brought my T4R for its regular oil/filter service. My mechanic was checking the tire pressures with it up on the hoist, and he could not turn the rim freely by hand. Again pads had to be replaced, and rotors machined. Expensive repair.

With the power/torque of the V8, early signs of this issue are easily missed. Simply putting the vehicle in drive and stepping off the brake, the vehicle easily creeps ahead. Vehicles with less torque would not creep, leading to easy diagnosis. By the time most if us recognize a problem, the seized caliper has caused damage to pads and rotors.

I take very good care of my T4R, and follow recommended maintenance service. I also expect a certain amount of wear and tear on certain items. But this seems to be a premature failure of a component due to poor design and/or construction.

I have contacted Toyota Canada to lodge my complaint, and urge fellow T4R owners in Canada to do the same. Here is the link:

For us Canadian 4th Gen T4R owners, you can also lodge your complaint with Transport Canada as a safety concern - check this link:

https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/PCDB-BDPP/fc-cp.aspx?lang=eng

A definite safety issue in my mind - having brake calipers seize that might effect safe braking should be properly addressed by Toyota.

Toyota don't care - they know they can always point to the root cause as corrosion and argue it's therefore just a natural part of the truck ageing and a routine maintenance item. I'm on my second set of fronts at 160000km FWIW. If Toyota did care they would have fixed the issue as a running change before the end of the 4th Gen - my bigger worry is there seems little change in the design for the 5th Gens so I expect to hear about it there in a couple of years.

Me too...

Today I joined the club (bummer). After the four mile drive home from where I walk my dog I noticed a strong brake smell and a lot of heat coming from the left front wheel. Took it over to my guy at the dealership and, sure enough, it was a frozen caliper. The didn't have the part in stock so they sent me home in a service loaner - should get the 4Runner back tomorrow after I give them about $800 to make it right.

I'm about fed up with this vehicle - it's been a money pit for sure.

What else to make it a money pit? Calipers are not that big of a deal, in my opinion...

I have a two inch file folder full of service receipts over the 114,200 mile life of the truck - always take good care of my vehicles but this one wears out tires faster (five sets so far), wears out brakes faster (and, I never had calipers go out before), develops rattles and squeaks earlier, burns out wheel bearings more often than any other vehicle I have owned over the past 45 years or so.

Hate to sound like a broken record, but has anyone else reported the issue to the Toyota Customer Service hotline or the NHTSA? Toyota won't issue a recall if they don't think they have a problem on hand. Other than the calipers, the 4Runner has been great. Brakes are something that a car manufacturer should stand behind though.

Yeah - Toyota doesn't give a rat's a** (it's a result of poor owner maintenance practices). The NHTSA? My daughter had a serious electrical problem with her '98 VW that caused it to stop running at different times (like on the Interstate while driving the speed limit in heavy traffic). I'm sure that car has already gone through the crusher (she got rid of it several years ago) but we have yet to receive any communication from the NHTSA regarding any of the complaints.

Add me to the list of FC. 2004 with 145K on it. cant blame it, she is old, and with horrible fluid. I am new to it, previous owner never had it flushed I am sure. but I will do it tonight. I wasted yesterday flushing the front, but didnt have the key in the on position, so the brakes feel worse now. ugh. have to do a another round of bleeding everything tonight with key "on". hopefully this is it.

Aftermarket? The only calipers I've seen are remanufactured (or brand new) OEM Toyota units. I searched high and low for a replacement caliper that was not a Toyota casting, but I couldn't find one anywhere, other than some high-performance racing set-ups, which were big $$$

Just FYI-- you can easily bleed the rear brakes by having someone step on the brake pedal and hold it down. Just make sure the ignition is ON (engine not running) and the pump will continually force brake fluid through the bleeder. No need to pump the pedal or use a vacuum pump of any sort on the rear brakes. Unfortunately, the front brakes have to be bled the old fashion way (pumping the pedal or using a vacuum bleeder system).

Update! November 2015 and 169,800 km and the right caliper has seized again. The brake pedal when depressed was starting to feel soft and spongy. Regular brake services done - most recently 6 months ago at 161,700 km.

Went ahead and replaced both front calipers, rotors and pads.
