Surely you deserve a hood this nice, don't you? I don't ship these hoods so please don't ask. I did ship SILVER 001 to California http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/188609-tutorial-shipping-sport-hood-greyhound-texas-california.html#post1919611, but I'll never do that again... that was a one-time experiment.
This Sport hood looks almost as nice as GRAY 002 that I sold for $385 as soon as I picked it up at the salvage yard. The price for this hood is $365. As with most of these hoods there are scratches and some areas (mostly along the edges) with some very minor clear coat peel. This hood really needs to be professionally buffed and polished... the paint looks really nice and thick - it just needs to have more of a shine. This hood has the nicest heat shield that I have seen on any 3rd Gen hood. I've seen very few of these Gray hoods for sale anywhere. This is only the second one that I have found to sell. The Sport hoods only came in Gray one year... 2002.
The second gray Sport hood sold over the phone when I picked it up at the salvage yard. The first green Sport hood I picked up in Houston sold in 15 minutes. The black Sport hood I sold in less than a day. The third silver Sport hood I sold over the phone before I even had a chance to pick it up at the salvage yard. Other Sport hoods I have sold took a week or two. If you want a Thunder Cloud Gray OEM Sport hood don't wait. These are very rare and Toyota isn't making any more of them. As you can see most of these sell in less than a day.
Toyota isn't making any more of these hoods and they are becoming more difficult to find. More than half of the Sport hoods I find at salvage yards are damaged form the wreck that caused the vehicle to end up in the salvage yard in the first place. Sometimes when I find them the salvage yard wants $400 to $500 for them. This is the first OEM Sport hood I have bought to sell since July! Keep in mind that I am always looking for these.
The "points" near the windshield and the front corners are in perfect condition - not bent. This hood was removed from a 2002 4Runner and placed in the back of my 4Runner on a furniture pad. When I unloaded it from my 4Runner I placed the "points" on buff pads so they wouldn't touch the tile floor.
The underside is in excellent condition. Everything is there including the heat shield, underside attachments for the scoop insert, a legible VIN #, TOYOTA stamped in the steel, two factory instructional stickers, and the clips for the washer fluid line. All 11 plastic/rubber discs that hold the heat shield are there.
I realize that this price is not exactly cheap, but please keep these things in mind when you are evaluating this purchase:
- The scoop insert and related parts cost $150 brand-new from Toyota.
- The heat shield for these Sport hoods costs $285 brand-new from Toyota.
- You can buy a cheaply made aftermarket hood for $150, add the Toyota scoop insert and other extras for $150, add the heat shield for $285 and then paint match and blend into the fenders and you would be over $800 with a reputable paint shop, plus you wouldn't even have an OEM hood.
- I bought my Stellar Blue Sport hood from Long Beach, CA for $300, paid fellow forum member Brent $150 to box, crate and transport the hood to be shipped, then I paid Greyhound $141 to ship it http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/183299-help-needed-wilmington-long-beach-cali-area-bought-stellar-bue-sports-hood.html#post1859489, and finally I paid a guy $50 to buff out most of the paint imperfections. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/183299-help-needed-wilmington-long-beach-cali-area-bought-stellar-bue-sports-hood-3.html#post1875536 I'm in mine for over $600 and I still think that it was worth it.
- This hood makes perfect sense for a highly detail-oriented 4Runner owner who will install this hood and transform his 4Runner into a more aggressive vehicle. For someone less particular this hood might not be worth the price.
After most of these hoods sold I had multiple buyers who wanted to buy it. Obviously the time to buy these is when they are still for sale. If your 4Runner has factory paint in one of the six colors the Sport hood was offered in you should probably go ahead and get it when you find one for sale in your color. So far the Sport hoods I have sold have been perfect color matches when bolted in. Painting and color-matching these hoods (and blending the paint into the fenders) with another color is not cheap.
If your 4Runner is not one of these six colors it probably doesn't really matter which color you buy since it will be repainted anyway. You could always paint it flat black until you are ready to spend the money to have it color-matched. If you paint it flat black it would probably look sharp to color match the scoop insert to your factory paint. Most people can paint the scoop insert at home.
