Turning on DRLs on 2004?

I had my first oil change today, thought I would have them turn on my daytime running lights while I was there but the service department said it can't be done on my model. I have read a few posts about this, but haven't seen anyone say they have actually had it done, only that it should cost around 40 dollars. Has anyone had theirs done so I can go back and tell my dealership?

On my limited it was an option as part of an option package so I don't think everyone just automatically has them.

Mine came with DRL so I can't say for certain, but I believe it requires a special computer to connect to the truck, then it has multiple things that can be changed.

Im pretty sure its not model specific given that I have an SR5 and you have a Sport. I'm pretty sure its a general option. Mine came with that option when I bought it. I would be willing to bet that they can do it for you as it was an option that you could have had. Sounds like they were just being D**Ks.

If I remember correctly, 4Runner's that came with DRL from the factory have the ability to be turned on or off by the dealer. If DRL was installed by the dealer then I don't believe it can be turned off as simply. So if your truck didn't come with it, you wouldn't be able to turn it on, but rather add it on for more money if anything.

I'll double check and search through some threads on the matter.

EDIT

Here something on the matter.

After searching more on the matter, I can see why there's a lot of confusion on the matter. If anything, I'd call up another service department and see what they have to say.

Thanks, I will try over the holidays at the dealer by my home while on vacation. Maybe they will know, I'll hopefully have news if it can be done when I get back.

Sorry for the long delay on reply, I've been on vacation. Not in school here, I'm actually in the air force stationed here.

Even if you could get them turned on, your probably better off without them.

One of the reasons Toyota came out with a way to disable DRL was the problem folks were having at military bases with the gate guards and increased security.

It is a pain going through the gate and explaining that you can't turn the lights off, but my last two cars had them and I think they are used to it by now. Also some cars have a switch to disable them temporarily, but my two concerns are that studies show you are less likely to get into an accident with them, and I am so used to having automatic headlights in my celica that I sometimes forget to turn on my lights in the rain. I was just wondering because I had read they could be turned on, but I can live with out them. Thanks, and I am an air traffic controller ChuckyD

toyogirl,

Have you ever been to Kadena AB? It's one of the best USAF gigs going.

The AF ATC controls all flights, military and commercial, into the airspace at Kadena and Naha International.

I'd like to know what you find out on the DRL's. I asked the part guy at my dealership about adding them and he said there wasn't a part number available in the US for adding them but that some guy had ordered something from Canada and did it.
