Battery Questions? 4 Anyone w/out OEM batt

What kind of batteries do you guys use in your third gen?

Looking to get a new battery..

Would like to get an optima yellow top deep cycle since i have a system in my car.

Has anyone used one?
if so, which one in particular?

Any other suggestions?

I've had an Optima red top in my 4Runner since I bought it. The previous owner put it in and I haven't had to touch it in over 50k miles. It still seems to be running strong, so I'd definitely recommend them. Most car batteries struggle to make it 2 years out here in the desert. I don't know how old this battery was when I bought the truck, but I've had it for almost 2.5 years now with no problems. I don't have a system or any other intense electrical draw though, so I can't help you there. I saw that Costco had a selection of the Optima batteries (red and yellow top) last time I was there, so you may want to check their prices before buying.

I have a red top. I've got a 3 channel amp for my sub and front speakers.

It's been doing me fine, just moutning the damn thing is a pain. I had to put a wood block in, so far it's been doing good.
 
Bought an optima yellow top, terminals were reversed on the one i bought, but luckily, the cables reached...thank god for GM sidepost adapters.

Nice thing is, all the wires are on the side, which makes the install clean..

So came to find out, after wrenching on the battery i had, the terminal on the top had acutally broken, inside the battery...
Eh, justified the $$ for the new yellow top,

thanks for the suggestions guys, looks like ill be happy with the optima
 
I got 7 years on my OEM batt in my 1999 SR5 4Runner. Swapped for the 34R Red Top Optima this fall when the old one finally died. Installed it myself in two minutes in the parking lot of Batteries Plus store. The spacer came with the battery as part of packaging. Bolts right in. We got down to 15 degrees this week and that Red Top really kicks her over.
 
Went w/ the red top but couldn't find the reverse terminal type. I've had it for six months and it's been great. Here's a pic:

just found this thread but i am not too happy with optimals, dont get me wrong but i have too many friends into car stereo comps and they go through batteries like candy. the only one i know of that hasnt changed batteries in over 3 years is running 2 orbital black tops(RV battery). each battery has 1017 cca tested at numerous places.
i love mine and since its a gell cell i run it laying on its side so that i can hook all the noramal stuff on the top of the battery and still have open access to the additional terminals on the side.

I have the 34R and have nothing but praise for the product. It was a challenge finding a 34R though, but I'm pleased over all and no power problems with running aux. lights w or w/o the engine on.
 
If you buy an Optima for a 4Runner, you will want the reverse terminal battery. You will probably have to special order it from Optima unless you're lucky and a parts store happens to have one. I had to do the side post mount myself, but it's in good and that leaves the top posts free for easy jumping.
