Seatbelt warning light randomly flashing, but belt is on...

Ok, this is a weird one. Twice now, randomly on longer drives, my red "seatbelt not fastened" little red dude has started flashing, but both times my seatbelt was securely fastened. Unbuckling then rebuckling it stopped the light from flashing. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Is there a contact in there I can clean or something?

I have never heard of this before. I am fairly sure the seatbelt lights/warnings are activated when there is weight placed onto the seat, whether that be a heavy box or a person.

Ha, this happened to me too the other day. Also an 04.
 
I know this is an old post, but did anyone find an answer? Some times when I buckle the light goes out, sometimes it stays blinking, a re-buckle will turn it off

Seems to be a '04 thing as mine does it too. There likely is a contact in the receiving end of the buckle that needs to be cleaned/adjusted, I just haven't cared enough to look into it. :)

Is it the seatbelt light by the odometer or red light by the air condition knobs below the stereo?

The seatbelt light by the odometer is for the driver seatbelt, and the seatbelt light below the stereo is for the passenger seat belt. I know in my 2004 4Runner if I put a backpack on the passenger front seat the seatbelt light below the stereo flashes and I think it has a weight sensor there and thinks someone is sitting in the passenger seat.

Oh yeah I'm talking about the driver side light, for some reason some times it doesn't sense the belt being buckled, just have to re-buckle to get it to go off, not a big deal, just a little annoying.
 
I dont wear my seatbelt and the light will flash half of the time and sometimes ill be driving then it decides to come on and blink. I have a 05
 
There is definitely a switch in the buckle, now what type of switch I can't say, I haven't had one apart, but more likely it's a sensor type, like a reed switch or prox switch. I personally think you probably have a broken/loose wire then a bad sensor. They don't fail too often.
