Off-roading Trip 2/17/07 near Houston!!
Hey all,
We're having another off-roading trip on the weekend of 2/17/07 at Generalsams.com:
Generals Sam's
It is in Huntsville. I think that the gate fee is $15. It is a lot of fun...something for everyone (beginners to semi-expert trails). Food is available on site. Bypasses are available on most trails.
Last time out, we had a mix of vehicles...we are an all-brand group. See link to video of last outing: Off-roading 8/05/06 - Google Video
Date: 2/17/07
Where: Generalsams park (see link above)
When: around 1:30 pm
Please repond to this thread if you are going...so that we don't leave anyone behind.
See you on the trails....

Group pic: 1 stock FJ (6MT, rear locker, ATRAC...only 2 days old!), two heavily modified Rubicons, and myself.
The trip went great...Video guy went down...so no video this time. I did get stuck really really bad.
On another note...the Firestone Destination M/Ts worked GREAT!

Finally, here is my G sunken down to slider depth...it actually went a bit deeper as i tried in vain to get out. Jeep Rubicon could not pull me out...the G weighs too much and i sunk too deep. We had to use the Rubicon's winch to pull me out (plus the Rubicon pulling me).

NNNOOOooo! Tell me it isn't true. You staged it right?
Bad enough you got the G stuck, but to get rescued by a Jeep? Should have let the FJ had a go at it.
Seriously, how did it happen. Was it you or the truck?
The military version is rated better than the Humvee on some tests so it's time to give up some luxury. Put some suspension mods into it.

There is no shame in asking for a tow...i am trying real hard to believe in that!
We did not even think about the FJ because it had street tires on (Dunlops). The two Rubicons have mud-terrains and have 4:1 low-range with great low pulling power. But, it was still not enough...it took one Rubicon and a winch to finally free my >5500 lbs metal box.
As for how it happened, i guess that i have to point the finger at me. The problem was that the terrain was muddy with standing water...but it did not seem deep. You could see the bottom...about 2-3 inches. However, as i drove deeper, my G started to sink. Sinking and sinking. My M/Ts had no chance because i sunk too quickly (5500 lbs again) and thus was down to my axle and skidplate level in no time at all! I tried every trick in the book...i could not even rock my vehicle back and forth.
The only thing that i could use were Super Swampers or something with huge lugs and huge lug space. Oh yeah, a weight lost program for my G would not hurt either.

That's kind of what our Cherokee looked like last time it got stuck in the mud. I pulled it out with the F150, but the front axle got some of the gew in it, leaked a sandy oily substance on the driveway, and had to be re-built

Well, hopefully, it won't happen to me. All my diffs, TC, and transmission have true breather tubes all the way up to the top of the engine bay. We will see....

Two problems: 1. Cost so damn much! Everything is imported from Germany...no one locally does it because there is no market for it (most G's spend their time at the mall), and 2. The G has too much electronics that go haywire when you're not in factory specs. I have 32" tires (stock is 31")...this is as big as i can go. I can go to 33", BUT my ESP (stability control) freaks out (i had 285/60/18 once).
In addition, except for the very rare occasion, i am extremely happy with what my otherwise stock G can do. My clearance angles right now with 32" tires are pretty good. So far (knock on wood), i have done everything that these lifted & modified Rubicons have done and had never needed a tow until this time. And this time, no one went thru the mud spot after i got stuck (i was lead vehicle).
Conclusion: i hate mud.
