100k - 200k mile 4th gen v6's post up

Peter 78 questioned the 4gen v6 durability in the 5th gen thread so I was wondering what other high mileage members besides (the josh) have had as far as issues and how many miles some of the members were up to.

As for me, I am up to 107,500 and with 2 spark plug changes, one at 45k and one at 85k and regular air and oil changes every 3-7k. 1 set of front brakes and have goodyear sa as my 3rd set of tires. Only issue I have had is the ac/heater system disinfected with anitbacterial solution at 36k. Would love to hear from other 4th gen v6 folk, especially those with higher miles then mine.

My wifes 03 V6 Sport has 150,000 no problems to date. It just keeps going and going!!!
I have an 08 V6 Limited with less than 10K.

I'm almost there, I have 92.5K miles on an 04. So far 3 spark plug changes @ 30, 60 and 90k. Annual air filter, in cabin air filter, one radiator flush 60k, synthetic gear lube done at 60K. Serpentine belt at 90K. Runs like a top.

I wish the seat was more comfortable though.

Good idea. It would be nice to see how they hold up. there was another person besides Josh that needed a new engine and thanks to the search working, I found it.

I've got an 03 with 133K. So far so good, I've got an appointment at the shop for Friday for a tune-up...hopefully I get a good bill of health!

However my 91 SR5 V6 is a different story...anybody have an extra 4WD transmission laying around?
 
123k miles, bought it in late april, 125k now.

first thing i did was to swap out the entire stock shocks and coil springs with a set off FJC off-road package silver bilstein ones. the stock rear shocks were ok, but the front shocks were completely toast, i could compress them with 2 fingers from each hand.

next was the notorious belt squealing from the belt tensioner pulley. simple fix with some cleaning and lube, changed the serpentine belt while i was there, too.

other than that, so far, so good(knock on wood). of course i changed all the driveline fluids and filters, tires.
 
101k so far with no major problems... A/C Relay went out at around 50k... and I think that's about it! Everything else has been absolutely trouble free. As far as I can tell, as long as you keep oil IN the engine, these things will run forever.... ;):

Just turned over 160k and keeps going. I do oil changes every 5k on the dot with regular oil, lol. Pulled the valve covers and everything looks clean and good and timing chain looked good. Only problem to date is the ac relay went out. Also change the tranny fluid every 15k but I tow alot. No problems in the trans dept. Its a beast, can't wait to hit 200k.

Curious...how much for the Bilsteins and install? And did you notice a big difference in ride quality once you swapped them out? I am also experiencing the squealing - good to hear it's an easy fix...
 
Recently hit the 100,000 milestone (actually 160,934.4 Km) with no engine issues. Just regular maintenance. Changing the Mobil 1 every 16,000 Km, changing the OEM oil filter every 8,000 Km.
Actual kilometres on the odometer were only 157,338 when I hit the milestone because I'm running oversize tires that have given me 3,596 bonus Km so far.

got them off FJC forum for like $120 all 4 corners include the whole front coilovers. FJC coils are different than the 4runner's, though they are the same height sitting on the ground(i mean off the truck). the front coils have same number of wraps but the wire is thicker, the rear has the same wire but 1 extra wrap than stock 4runner's. they give the front about 1" lift and 3/4" in the rear. the ride is firmer but you can only tell when going over bumps. because of the amount of lift is so small, no alignment is needed. took me about 3 hours to complete in my driveway.

the belt is very simple job, it takes about 40 minutes.

Interesting, I sure wish that I had held onto my stock FJ suspension when I swapped it out for an OME setup. Right now 'a little firmer' would be a welcome change since right now if feels like i am floating all over the road. Thanks for the info.
 
For what it is worth, I bought my 2004 with 41,000 miles and now have 51,000 miles. I changed the oil the day I bought it and noticed the oil turns brown fairly quickly. I used Mobil 1 and decided to change it early, after a few changes it is starting to look much better.

Also, I have read issues with the noise from the timing chain and the issue with sulfer smell. My engine runs well and seems pretty quiet and no sulfer smell, yet. Also, I am getting used to the shifter gate for the transmission, it is just differnt than the 3rd gen, not better or worse, just different.
 
Glad to hear all of you having great luck with your 4th gen 4R's above 100k miles! I only have 34,500 miles on my '07 and she is barely broken in! Looking forward to 100k+ miles out of her....

As my high school auto shop teach used to say, dark oil means its doing it's job. Regardless of what kind of oil you run (traditional dino or synthetic), the oil can only trap so much carbon and contaminants without needing to be changed. Even on Mobil 1's website, they recommend changing their synthetic oil at the manufacturer's suggested intervals. I know a lot of people here use synthetic and change the filter at 5k mile intervals and the oil at 10k miles intervals (for standard Mobil 1). I agree that this method probably works fine but if I'm going to go through the effort of crawling under my car to change the filter and loose about a quart of oil in the process, I might as well pony up the extra $$$ and do the entire oil change at the same time. I'm starting to veer off topic but that is my $0.02 for getting as much miles out of your engine as possible.

In your case, Peter, it sounds like there may have been more deposits in your engine than normal, but I'm glad to hear that it is looking cleaner and better for you with each oil change. :cheers:

No I didn't run a feeler gauge/plastigage. I don't even know the specs for the valve lash intake or exhaust. I just know nothing was tapping and looked really clean under there. I know there is wear, no off the shelf motor oil has had zinc since the late 80's early 90's so we are all fubar'd, lol. I only run zinc oil in the honda at $15 a quart, lol. No wear period and that was mic'd. I will pull the runner motor apart, just gotta wait till it goes and will mic everything. Gotta get a factory service manual while im at it. :)
 
2004 SR5 4Runner V6 Purchase new Jan 2005

I have 109,500 miles, all maintenance intervals done, oil every 5k miles. Changed the oil on the three differentials at 50k miles, 2 new front discs at 70k miles, on 2nd battery, transmission oil flush at 94k miles, two front outer cv boots at 95k miles, coolant flush at 100k miles, new brake fluid at 108,500 miles.

Sunroof cable broke, but replaced under warranty.

Had to replace the front left manifold which has a built in cat and left front O2
sensor at 108,500 miles.

It's been the best car I've ever owned.
 
Going strong at 145,000

I have a 2004 SR5 with the V6 and the engine (and everything else) has been flawless. I'm the original owner and have had the oil changed every 5,000 miles and followed the factory maintenance intervals. Dealer has done all the service. Brakes & rotors replaced and on 3rd set of tires (OEM which stunk and 2 sets of Bridgestone AT Revos which are great) and ready for new tires in fall. Not a single problem (I don't care about once in a while sulfer smell) in 145,000 miles of driving!
 
124,000 miles on my 2003 Limited v6. a/c compressor was starting to make some noise, so replaced that about 1,000 miles ago just in case it decided to shell. no engine problems at all. Had two brake jobs and two sets of Michelins, regular maintenance, thats it.
