Whats the Story on Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 OEM Tire?

I was casually surfing at tirerack and decided to look up the tires that my T4R came with. I was suprised to read lousy review after negative review. Saying things like dangerous, how could toyota do this, no snow traction, poor wet traction, tred wears out right away.
What are your opinions? Should we do a poll?
I have like 1000 arround town and hywy miles of which i've driven maybe 300 of them and have no special opinion one way or the other for a tire that is an obvious all season design.

I have the Dunlops AT20s also. My experience with them so far aren't too bad, although I haven't tried them on snow yet. Some have said they were ok in snow, others said the opposite. They're perfectly fine for me in dry conditions, but in wet conditions, they could've performed a bit better. I have about 24k miles on them (90% hwy miles; in 11months). Perfectly worn, no signs of irregular wear and plenty of tread left. I've rotated them only once at 15k miles. I run them at 41psi front & 37psi rear. I'm just waiting for them to wear out before getting some revos! :D
BTW: my boss's AT20s on his 1.5 yr old Sequioa has major irregular wear possibly due to lack of rotation or bad alignment. He can't possibly have as many miles on his as I have on mine.
 
I haven't had any bad experiences yet with them. I have a little over 10,000 mi on them and have been in dry conditions, wet, snow/ice, and mud. Snow traction isn't the best when in 2wd but put her in 4wd and the thing is a tank. This past winter I've stopped many times in the middle of a hill to ask people if they needed any help. Then pulled out the rest of the way up, no problems. I am going to get a set of Revo's though once these wear out because everyone raves so much about them, but as far as the AT20's go I have no complaints.
 
IMO snow performace is below par and wet traction is terrible.

I have almost 25K on mine and I can't wait to bump up to a 265/70 Revo or BFG AT KO. I run mine with 42 PSI in them, honestly hoping they will wear out sooner! Plus it helps the gas mileage. I also notice that the side walls are pretty soft, I have been offroad several times and the side walls and white letters are looking pretty rough! The outside tread is starting to show some wear, but I haven't been on top of the tire rotations, mostly because I don't care how long they last. I will probably run them out to the end of the summer/fall or 30-35k what ever comes first.


Its a cheap OEM tire. I never really expect much out of OEM tires, unless of course the OEM tires are Michlen tires! They are not a offroad tire at all. Its just a cheap all season tire that toyota slapped on to save a few bucks.

If you plan on doing any serious offroading, I would ditch the Dunlops. I just offroad when I have spare time, and that doesn't happen often enough! NE ways just my 2 cents.
 
I have not had any problems in the snow or rain. I am a conservative driver and only have 3800 on them.

You don't see many new vehicles with great tires from the factory. Usually cheap, middle of the road tires.
 
I think the biggest complaint is the fact that we did not get a real A/T tire with a truly capable SUV. I have 34K on mine and my experiences have been good on dry until just recently (tread must be too far gone), horrible in any kind of wet offroad use (even just a little mud), not good in snow. I am always concerned about rough/sharp rocks. Tire wear has been even. I think it is a decent tire for daily driving, and the occasional dirt/gravel road, which is probably why Toyota put them on there.
Like others, I can't wait to replace them; which won't be long for me.
 
Don't mean to hijack here, but I'm curious who gets what tires from the factory. My '05 V6 4x4 came with Bridgestones, "Dueler H/Ts", 265/65.

Edit: Should've stated: SR5.

Not sure what the deciding factor is but most SE models I have seen came with the Dulop AT 20's.
 
All SEs come with Dunlop AT 20s. SR5 and Limited gets the Dueler HTs.

I just replace my Dunlops at 7100 miles. From my unscientific findings, the tire gets bad when its over 10-15k miles. I didn't want to wait that long so I just switched to Revos. It helped that they had a $75 MIR :D.
 
When I bought mine I had the dealer take the white lettered tires off my SE and switch them with the Michelin Cross Terrains that were on a SR5 :) The Michelins are twice as good as the other two brands that Toyota uses. All the 4runners I now see at the dealer have either the Dunflops or the Brigstones but I never see any with the Michelins. If I bought another 4runner Michelins or REVO's would have to be part of the deal. JMHO By the way 20K miles and my Michelin Cross Terrains look and perform like new. I run 36 PSI's in all 5 tires, I think 32 PSI is too low and 38+ PSI is too rough riding.
 
The Dunlops are nothing special, but to call them dangerous one must really suck at teh driving.

I drove mine for 2 years and 30,000kms of 4-season use (and we have 4 real seasons round here). Sure a Blizzak would have been better on ice, and a BFG A/T would have been better on dirt, but they OEM tires still worked. I probably would have driven them another 10,000kms in the summer before replacment, as they were getting pretty cooked, but that's as long a tread life as most OEM rubber can hope for.
 
I have 53K on mine, looks like the tread is almost gone. I don't have much trouble in the rain (prob due to the AWD). These were decent in the snow when the tire was new, but this last winter was horrible. Does anyone know the expected miles Dunlop quotes for these tires?

I'm prob gonna switch these out to the Michelins, they got some good reviews on tire rack as a good all-season tire.

Nope, my Limited came with the Dunlops, but I do think that most Sports come with the Dunlops. I would've figured the Ltds would come w/michelins.
 
I will have to chime in and state that the Dunlops do suck. The first winter here in NY was ok with them. Enough traction to get me where I needed to go. But the second winter was HORRIBLE. Skidding and sliding all over the place. I now have an 05 with new tires and they will most likely be replaced next fall for the 06 winter. I had 20K on my 03 Runner and the tread stunk and was quite low. They seem to wear very quickly.
 
i have about 14,500 miles on my Dunlops and i have mixed feelings.

-dry pavement they're fine.
-wet pavement they're fine, unless you hit a puddle. i've noticed they hydro-plane more than the Duelers i had on my previous T4R and GMC.
-snow
 
My '05 SR5 V8 had what seemed like an out-of-balance wobble from day 1. The dealer rebalanced and it didn't fx it. A call into Toyota revealed that the Dunlop's have a tendency to flat spot when sitting for a period of time. My truck didn't sit for very long considering it's a 2005. They replaced the Dunlop's with Michelin's and all is well.
 
I live in Colorado wher eit can snow and rain in the same day, and i think the Dunlops rock. they never slip and i can stop on a dime in the snow, and the rain is a joke as it is.
probably not the most quality tire out there, but why would they put expensive tires on the truck any way? it doesnt make any logical sense.
 
Seems like a mixed bag of responses. The ones I had didn't inspire confidence...they were not great in rain, and snow made the truck slide too much on the streets. Ditched them for the Revos and have been very happy with the decision.

Clearly a case of YMMV.
 
2010 FJ 17 mag wheels for 2005 4R 17 mag wheels

Does anyone know if the FJ 17" wheels have the same offset as the 4R 17" wheels.

I found a set of the FJ's mag wheels w Dunlop tires (15K miles) for $600 and would like to have an extra set of wheels so I don't have to swap out each winter. the tires on the FJ are 265 70 17 and my 4R has 265 65 17, I'm not sure if my stock set up has enough clearance to just make a swap.

If someone could validate that the offset is the same on these two wheels and that the bigger size would fit, many thanks.
