License Plate - metal on metal contact

I'm a relatively new T4R owner (the ever popular Galactic Gray SR5 V8) and have enjoyed reading the posts here and have learned a lot from you guys.

I have a question that I'm hoping y'all can help me out with. I notice that the license plate on the back of my 4 Runner is in direct contact with the body of the truck. It looks like this metal to metal contact is starting to rub/scratch the paint on the back of my car in the area underneath the plate (specifically on the lower edge of the plate). Anyone have any suggestions as to how to prevent this?

I had a metal LP frame that came with the vehicle, but I thought it would only make the problem worse so I removed it. I'm thinking I need a LP frame that is rubber coated and has a solid back to keep the plate from rubbing on the vehicle...but I'm sure I'm not the first person to worry about this and surely there's a simpler solution out there someplace.

i bought some weather stripping from home depot with the 3M backing tape. I stuck them right on back of the liscence plate. works well! :)
 
Ya that bugged me too....I did the same thing and got some soft foam 3M stuff with sticky backing and stuck it to the back of the plate. The stuff I used was like double thick canopy tape and worked perfectly.

Also, those of you with front plates, I recommed putting some on the plate where it meets the bottom portion of the bumper....I didn't on my black rig and in a couple years the plate vibrating basically wore through the paint.

Not a big deal, cause's it's all plastic there, but looks ugly when you take the plate off.
 
I got a 1/8" foam sheet used for arts/crafts, then I cut it to the size of the license plate and gave it a good spray of 3m adhesive. So now I have full coverage on the backside of the plate.

I didn't have quite the same problem you do, but I had metal on metal caused by my woofer and it made an annoying rattle.


I rammed a couple of bark chips and a napkin from the drive through under the plate....



We call this "white trash engineering", but you can't beat the price or the time it took to do this awesome "mod".
