Knight Rider Hood Scoop Mod . . .

Alright, with a little help from some friends, I mounted an LED light into the fake hood scoop. I took photos, but they are of the old fashioned variety, so once I get them developed in a day or two, I will post the step by step instructions with accompanying pics. For now, here's a photo in action.

My friend used a slow shutter speed, so while in the photo it looks like all the lights are on, they actually flash in a pattern very similar to Knight Rider.

Very cool. Now all you need is a black leather jacket, a black wrist watch and the talking 4Runner mod.
 
if you werent a firefighter, would that be illegal to have(leds) i know it would be to have them on while driving but just fer show, whenever your messing around or something?
 
So you finally figured out how to get the hoodscoop out huh? lol, care to post some instructions? I was thinking of doing the same actually.

Its definitely illegal for on road use, unless its you are law/emergency personnel and using it for work purposes. It'd be ok to have on a "off road" vehicle though....

ok cause i remember having a cb hooked up to a PA under my hood on my bronco and me and my buddies used to have a good ol time with that.
 
I'm glad you were able to figure out how to get that sucker off. Looks cool. I can't wait to be at a decent computer where I can check out those videos. kglueck, thx for posting those for everyone.

Those lights look kewl as hell! Can you control how quickly the blue light in the hood scoop scrolls back and forth? I personally would like it scrolling slower...
 
Instructions for Hood Scoop Mod

Okay, here are the photos with instructions:

In this first photo, you can see how I scored the edges of the insulation and just bent it back up. The five big nuts are visible through the holes in the insulation, but you need to find a tiny screw recessed into the metal housing. It is just above the center screw, and in retrospect, had I known where it was, I could have just made a small hole just above the visible center nut and found it that way.

Here is a close-up. Just above the center nut and screw is a visible hole in the metal- this is where the small phillips head screw is buried.
 
Once you remove the five obvious nuts and the one hidden screw, the unit should lift up from the top of the hood. Lift it up, then pull it out. In the process you will break a very small plastic clip- the photo I had of it did not turn out. You can order a new one from Toyota, but to be honest, I didn't put it back, or the "hidden" screw that threads into it, and the unit holds without any problems.

This is what the scoop looks like from the back, once removed.

I put the scoop in a vise, outlined the light that I wanted to put in, then used a sawzall to cut out the form. Here is the pastic, cut out.

Here is the light I used. If you can tell, the lights "sit forward" on a larger base, so that I could wedge the front part of the light into the hole I cut, and then seal around the larger base.

I placed the front part of the light into the hole I had cut, then used silicon to seal it.

Here is the light screwed back into the hole in the hood. Again, I did not replace the "hidden" screw, and the unit holds fine without any visible difference.

Lousy pic (they all are, used the wrong film speed), but here is the light mounted. I taped the insulation back into place (again, if you make a small hole, this would be unneccesary to cut in the first place). The only real visible change is the red and blue wire running up under the insulation.

If you look carefully, you can see the lights through the scoop.

Since I am a firefighter, Blue is not illegal in my state. If someone wanted to do this, it could be used for show or on the trails.

I have no control on the speed of the light, just different flash patterns. There are a few other nice ones, but since it is in the grill, I figured I HAD to go with the Knight Rider pattern.
 
OK, I saw the video and once again I'm jealous. When I finally save up enough money to paint my new sport hood, I'm going to have to seriously consider doing this at the same time. BTW, how much was the LED unit? Sorry if you've already said and I missed it.......it's the middle of the night......and I just got done with a long drive.
 
The LED I used is a 911EP. It varies in price, depending on what color you use (due to different prices for the LEDs themselves based on how they get the color). Go to:

Amber: $150
Red: $180
Blue: $260
etc.

You can also check on e-bay. Lastly, if you want one, contact me, as sometimes I have friends selling them used, which is how I got mine.
 
I like the "stealth" look w/o the roof light... although you COULD install a second slimlighter or similar low profile light in the top center of the rear window to compliment the blue/amber lights in the rear... *GRIN*

What's nice about the scoop light is that at a distance and at night it appears to be about dash level -- as if it were mounted on your dash. You forgot to turn on your hazard lights along w/ the rest for your last video! (free extra flashing lights!)

Do you already have headlight wigwags installed? (another future addition perhaps?) HA!

Keep it up and you'll need to install a second deep cycle battery to power all the toys!

I'm wondering if the other colors would be legal?
