key FOB - where to get one?

Just bought a pre-owned 2004 4Runner last night. Dealership was too cheap to include the key FOBs. Their service dept wants $80 for each FOB.

1) Since the FOBs are likely programmable, I'm wondering if there somewhere online where I can purchase them.
2) If they don't include programming instructions, anyone know where I can locate some?

I bought 2 off eBay. You have to be sure the FCC ID is the correct one for it to work, though. All the reputable and knowledgeable sellers on eBay include the FCC ID in their descriptions since it's critical information.

As a point of reference, I'm driving a rental right now (out of town, and the rental agency upgraded us from midsize car to a 2004 4Runner SR5 4WD

). The FCC ID of this fob is HYO12BAN.

Thanks John!! I unloaded my problematic, gas guzzling, Chevy Silverado yesterday in exchange for this incredible piece of Toyota craftmanship.

It was the Toyota dealership that sucked.

I bought one off ebay to use with my 04 4Runner and I have never gotten it to work. It has the same FCC ID as the current one I have that works, however this one will not work. I don't know what to do with it.

about the programming...

I am not sure if you have to hook the truck up to a computer to do this. Only the dealer has this computer that goes through the port under the dash. I needed another valet key because my original one was needed for the remote starter and I had to bring my truck to the dealer to have it programmed. They had to hook it up and took around 45 minutes to do. Yet that is only a valet key that I needed programmed.

To program a key the dealer has to hook up the computer, AND you have to have a master key.

To program a key fob, you can do it with the correct instructions (see link in myu post, above)....I've programmed 2 extra key fobs on my truck.

Yeah, eBay's your best bet. I also have an extra that I got brand new for about $10. Programming took less than 5 minutes to do though the instructions make you wonder why they don't make you pat your head three times and stomp on the floor before pushing the lock button.

Ok, it just seemed like a major thing to program a simple key so I thought it must be even worse to program a remote. I had to give them every key to the truck and they didn't even know if the remote starter would work after they programmed the other keys.

the keys are far from simple since they have the immobilizer chip in them. they don't even recommend putting other keys with immobilizer chips on the same key ring as it may erase the chips.

I knew about the immobilizer chip, but compared to a BMW immobilizer key (the only other key I am familiar with), these are complicated. With the BMW, you just put the key in the ignition, turn to on, and push two buttons on the key three times. You can program these keys by yourself. This is my first experience with programming Toyota keys because I never needed and extra key on my other 4Runner. Sorry to thread jack!

This is all great info...thx. Next question: how do I determine the correct FCC ID for my model?

In this thread, jharris supplied the code of HYO12BAN for a 2004 SR5 4WD. When I looked on eBay, I found a similar code for 2004 SR5: HYQ12BAN. How do I determine which one is the right code?

We've turned in the rental, but the fobs for my 2003 model are indeed HYQ12BAN. So I suspect that I misread the number -- it's very tiny print.

Anyone else with a 2004 model that can verify? The FCC ID is on the back of the key fob, first line at the top.

my fobs for my 2004 are HYQ12BAN. did have to pull out the "unused" one to read it (much easier to see the Q on that one)

Those programming instructions posted above didn't work on mine. My FCC ID is HYQ12BAN. My remote also has the window button for the back door. I'm trying to get all doors to unlock with one-touch. Any advise???

In order to do that, you have to bring your truck to the dealer. They have a computer plugs into a port under your dash that controls this function. You cannot program that by yourself. Just be aware that some Toyota dealer will charge you for this if it is not done at the time of purchase.
