I posted a concern about the new 18 in tires on the 06 4runner. Purchase the Limited and this is the tire no other options. It is a 60 series tire. I am worried that the rim will get bent just doing light off roading because of the 60 series profile. 322 people veiwed the thread and only Thai responded. He must be the only person on the forum that knows what low range is. Dont mean to disrespect the forum, but maybe you only need 2wheel drive if big rims and 60 series worthless tires are your preferance. I am shocked that 4 wheel drive people would not be calling Toyota or expressing outrage that they are putting a car tire on a very capable suv, and rendering it a car with ground clearance. Hope I did not hurt any feelings, if I did im sorry.

It's not a big deal because you can always swap out the 18" rims for the 16" or 17" rims from older 4runners. I don't think that the brake size changed any so the older rims should fit nicely.

You still have more choices than my G500 ever did.:)
 
99% of the people buying a new 4Runner Limited aren't going to take it off road. Even in this forum, the ones that do aren't going to be doing it with stock wheels and tires.

It's unfortunate, but the reality is that bling and comfort sell far more vehicles than off road capability these days. The market for real off road vehicles is just too small compared to those who just want to be posers. All you have to do is look at all of the SUV's with 20's and chrome everywhere compared to the number of lifted vehicles with off road tires to see where the money is. That's what Toyota and pretty much all of the rest of the companys are chasing. After all, they're in it for the money.

If you were that serious about offroading why not swap out the rims for beadlocks and bigger shoes? And what does it matter who does what with their 4Runner? Go ahead and bash me but I never take mine offroad? Why would I take a $44k MSRP SUV offroad and try to ruin it? I had a Jeep for the longest time and that was what I took to Paragon and any trail I found appealing. The main reason I bought my 4Runner was to tow my jetskis, snowmobiles and so on. :artist: :artist:
 
Even; the Lexus the GX 470 has 265/65/17 tires. Why do they have to screw up the 4runner. This put off my purchase for the 2006 yr. Maybe I will just buy a camry, just has small 4runner type tires on it any ways. On a brand new car Nobody should have to go through the trouble of swapping out rims, thanks for the suggestion.

If you buy an '05 4runner, then you would STILL have to swap out the crappy Dunlops for off-roading tires, right??!! I don't get your point. It's just a minor extra step...and i am sure that you will find older 4runner owners who would swap the 18" rims on your '06 4runner. The dealership may even do it for you.

Not sure what your crying about. You made a post, Thai replied. What more can anyone say? Sure it sucks if you want to buy this year model and offroad but what do you want people to say? We all feel sorry for you:chair: not!

Most people who offroad with any passion will likely change their wheels and tires at some stage, along with suspension lift etc etc.
You are buying a truck that suits a huge market of non-offroaders. When i bought my 82 Hilux Pickup the first thing I did was get an OME suspension lift and new rubber and steel. When I bought my 87 4Runner I remorsed over the lack of clearance compared to the pickup. But big deal. You gotta pay to play.

For someone who has only been here a while, maybe you should search out the people who do offroad on this forum and pm them rather than make a post that seems to be grizzling about people not responding to your post.

I agree that tire is not meant for off roading. You probably notice people off roading in this forum are 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation 4Runners. I would think when we have a 5th generation, we will see more 4th generation models going off road and getting rid of those 60 series tires.

Just like spyne said, the Limited is a luxury vehicle ($45K) and is not a vehicle to abuse off-road. Thats why the Limited is the only model with the 18s.

Being that you are new to this forum you should have read past posts about the off-roading members on this forum. If you did, you would not have been so quick to make stupid comments. Most of the members here do mild off-roading because we love our vehicles and are happy too just enjoy a great ride.

I agree with you to a point. I bought a '05 4Runner a couple months ago and I am pretty disgusted that Toyota saw fit to decrease the ground clearance as much as they did. But I knew this when I bought it. I haven't had a chance to take it off-roading yet and not sure how crazy you can get with it with only 9" of ground clearance. For this reason one of my future mods will be a lift, either spacers or remove the Xreas and do coil overs.
Probably leaning toward coil overs but who knows what will be coming out soon.
Point is, you mod it to work the way thats best for you.
If you want something with big tires, buy a POS Hummer.
 
Ok guys, no need to bash each other.

The point is......NOBODY can make EVERYBODY happy. Like someone else already said, Toyota is just trying to satisfy the "bigger" market. It just happens to be that it's not the offroading crowd that is the bigger market.

Another point.....i don't see a big deal to swap out your tires. The offroaders on this forum weren't even staisfied with the 03-04 4runner tires, so they swapped them out.
 
If you want the LTD, have the dealer switch the wheels as a condition of the sale.
If they won't do it, try a different dealer.
 
I know what you mean.... 18 inch rims on a 4X4. Just today I was watching motor trend tv or some show like that , and they had the 06 Land Rover (cant remember the model) and they were off roading , crawling around on rock trails etc with 20 inch rims and I think 40 series tires... I was like...WTF!! Come on , how many people actually off road a new land rover?

Then again, how many people offroad a 06 Limited 4R? Hmmmm?

BTW There is no reason why not to take an expensive vehicle offroad. It doesn't mean you have to destroy it and it will probably get more dings at the mall than on the trail.

Bottom line, you can sell those 18" wheels or trade them for 17" in a heartbeat with a number of people.

I am a pavement pounder since I sold my Wrangler.... Anyone wanna swap 18s for 17s?
 
I love my 2005 4runner se. Granted I don't offroad much per se. But towing motorcycles, dogs, snow boards, people, and gear is well suited to the 4runner. Especially when there are larger snow drifts in tahoe or mammoth. I dunno how many countless people my buddy and i have dragged out of the snow between us. You dont have to be an offroad junkie to make good use of your 4runner...
 
Gosh just looking at the responses to a non threating thread are something else. Did you miss the whole point. 60 series tires just dont belong on a suv. Im only going to do minor off roading and im sure even that with such a low profile will cause tire and rim damage, not to mention a small pot hole on the road. Plus I live in the snowiest metropolition city in the US. Revo tires would be nice, but they dont even make it in a 60 series because it is not even worth the trouble. They figure that series tire is for sunny weather only. That was the short version of the email they sent me when I asked if that tire would be available in the future. So my point is, even if you are not going to go off road, only glorified type car tires are available in that size. Spending 45K should at least get me a tire that does not belong on a car. Specifically meaning a 60 series tire.
 
Where are you located? I've got 17" SE rims, and am looking to upgrade. IM (aol instant message) me at entropyearthworm

No big deal to me.....anyone who does serious off-road or winter driving will have to buy an alternate set of wheels/tires anyways.

I would hardly say it "screws up the 4Runner," if you've got enough money to purchase/put gas in/insure a $40K SUV.....you've got enough money for a seperate set of steel wheels and upgrade tires if you want to bushwhack the thing.

As for thinking 60 series tires and 18" wheels will self-combust just from driving on a logging road or hitting a pothole......I think you'll be ok ;):
