90K service/timing belt/water pump

Ok, I did a search on this and found several different responses that were similiar, but somebody put it in black and white for me.

I've got 85K on the 01 LTD 4x4. At 90K I'm going to do the 90K mile service complete with diff and tcase fluid change (yeah I know a lot of that checking isn't really necessary but since it's the wife/kidmobile I'd rather just ante up and get it done rather than miss something). Also going to do timing belt.

The dealership here lists the 90K service at $339 (+35 each for the front diff/rear diff/tcase)
Timing Belt is $359 but that doesn't say anything at all about replacing any seals (cam/crank?).
What about the water pump? I'm thinking replace it rather than have to tear the whole thing down if it goes out soon, but I'm not going to let those suckers double charge me book labor time on the tbelt and the water pump.
What should I expect to pay (high/low guesstimate) for all of the above and anything else I should do/not do?

I have two old Jeep CJ's and while a Jeep might be a complete POS mechanically I CAN work on those easily. Water pump is a 2 hour job with a 12 pack on the CJ. I'm terrified of working on my Accord or the 4runner.

Anyhow, just checking to see what I'm missing here. Gonna quiz the service guys tomorrow when I'm there getting the 85K oil change done.

I am also about to do the same on my 99 SR5. The quote I got from one of the local Austin area dealers was $600 for the timing belt and water pump. Does this sound to high about right?

90k

I've got 83,000 on my 01' SR5 and have already looked into it to. My local dealer here in Florida is charging me about $600 to do this service, which includes timing belt and water pump. I am also having them replace the fuel filters. I did everything else already (ie: diff case).

So this seems to be the going rate. I found it to be reasonable considering all the work to be done and hey, if you want your rig for the next 90k, you'd better do it now.

I just did my timing belt about 5k ago and I did it myself. I know that you are nervious about doing it and totally understand. I am just posting up what I did and how much it cost me in parts alone.

Timinig Belt
Waterpump
Cam/Crank Seal
PS/ALT/A/C Belts
Plug Wires
Upper/Lower Rad Hoses
Thermostat
Rad Cap
Rad Fluid from Toyota (red stuff)
Worm Type Hose Clamps

All together it cost me 330 bucks in parts alone and about 6hrs out of my day. O and food and beer for my helper. Its not as bad as you think, nuts and bolts thats it. Just need to have a chain wrench to torque the crank bolt to 213ft lbs. I can see 600 bones about right maybe a bit high. Do the diff and tcase fluids yourself, I change mine (02 Tacoma) every 30k along with Tranny fluid. O and your spark plugs are due since if you changed them every 30k per requirements. O and change the waterpump while its apart, mine was leaking and had crusted fluid all over the place. You have to take all of the stuff off to do the timing belt just to get to the water pump. Good luck!

well, just dropped the 4runner off for the 85K oil change. I asked the service counter rat if the $330 for the timing belt included the water pump and he said "no if that looks like it needs to be replaced we'll call you and let you know while we've got it apart"

I asked "how much to replace the cam/crank seals and water pump while you've got it apart?"

$345 more:o

To be honest this is what I expected. They're going to try and double charge me book rate for labor by charging for both timing belt AND water pump as if they were done independently of each other.

I'm going to call back when the service manager is there (talked to a kid today) and see what they'll do, AND I'm going to call the other dealerships in the area and see who will work with me on it.

Anybody had any luck getting this done without being being double book rate charged for labor?

Hossmaster, this MIGHT be something I can do on my own, but in my experience with working on the Jeeps when I tear something down it takes me twice as long as I think it will and I'm a BFH type guy when it comes to working on things and usually end up breaking something when I try to do in depth work (example, I bent the water pump pully after replacing the water pump on one of the Jeeps, which put it out of comission until I could find another pulley). Can't have the wife's car out of commission so I'll bend over and let the dealership give it to me. I'm gonna see which dealership will be the most gentle before I bend over though.

I found the same pricing here. They add $140 labor for the pump job, plus the $140 or so for the part. I would hope it includes new coolant, but I did not ask..

It would have to include new coolant. When the take the pump off the coolant would all go everywhere if they didn't drain the rad first. I guess they COULD just pinch the hose shut and try to spill as little as possible, but it would be a lot easier for them to just drain it before they got into the tbelt/pump.

My response....

Hi Curtis, thanks for the speedy reply.
Your price on the timing belt and water pump/seals is a little better than I've gotten here in Fayetteville.
The 90K service is quite a bit more and includes a tranny flush and coolant flush that I'd rather not do. I know there are differing opinions on flushing trannys but everything I've seen and read on Toyotas calls for a drain and fill and not a flush. Likewise in my experience a simple drain and fill of the coolant is sufficient; I don't have much faith that flushing accomplishes anything, especially since almost all of the old coolant will come out anyway when the system is drained prior to removing the water pump.
What all does the "tune up" consist of exactly (plugs, air cleaner and ?)
Diff service F and R is something I wish to have done.
Fuel filter is a "not broke don't fix item"
Oil change will be needed
Tires are going to be replaced shortly so no need for balance/rotation.

Few items left out
Tcase fluid change?
Check brakes for wear?
Lube undercarriage/ drivetrain (I assume that's included in "tune up"
Adjust idle speed
Drive belts for alt and pwr steering/ac compressor should be replaced since they'll be off anyway (price for new belts?)
PCV Valve?
Clean intake/air flow sensor?

Dealership here has a good price on the 90K but they are basically double billing me the book rate on labor for the water pump/timing belt. I know that's not uncommon for shops but I have a problem with it since the timing belt must be removed to get to the water pump. Makes sense to me to replace them both to save labor costs tearing into the engine again if the water pump fails before the next timing belt is due, but doesn't work out that way if I still get charged for labor twice.

Here's what I'd like to have done
Tbelt
Water pump and seals
tranny drain/fill
new coolant
oil change
transfer case change
Front/rear diff change
plugs
PCV valve
lube chassis/drive shafts/etc

Inspect brakes, ball joints, dust covers, etc etc (all the things under "inspect the following" in the factory maint log)

What can you do for the above total price?

Again, thanks for the reply. The 4runner is the wife's car and has been dealer serviced since new so I'd like to stay with a dealership if the price is competitive. As I said Toyota of Fayetteville kinda rubbed me the wrong way by getting the "double book rate" on two jobs that require the same disassembly/assembly procedures.

Bottom line, I hate dealing with sleazy mechanics/dealerships who assume that since I'm bringing my vehicle to them for service that I don't know jack about autos.........
