99 SR5 with crickets in the AC

Hey all,

When I turn on the air conditioner, about 75% of the time I get this funky chirping that literally sounds like there are crickets in the ac. As I turn it up it gets progressively louder with the blower motor. I think I can get in there by taking off the dash bezel(s) but what can I use to 'lube' it to eliminate the chirping?

You say it happens when you turn the A/C on... is that the only time or does it happen anytime you have your blower fan on?

If it's anytime the blower fan is going, it could be dirt (dust, twigs, leaves) caught in the fan blades themselves. To clean this is simple enough on my 2002 4Runner (It would help if you told us what your vehicle is...) There are three bolts to take out, and one electrical connector to disconnect, and the blower motor and fan drop right out. I cleaned the blower fan blades, and sprayed a bit of lube spray (something that will last... not just WD-40) in the motor bearings.

Ahhh, my bad. It does indeed happen anytime the blower fan is on whether the a/c is engaged or not.

What other info do you need about my beast?

The blower motor is accessed under the hood or in the dash? Sounds easy enough to do, great info and is definitely worth a shot as that sounds like it may be the case. Thanks very much!

I did the removal without the using a power drill or flexible shaft. Conventional straight tools work fine if you remove a side plastic panel that obstructs access to one of the bolts.

A word of caution: take your time doing the actual cleaning, and do it carefully. I made some bonehead moves in haste and eneded up ruining the unit. If you do have the misfortune of needing a new blower assembly, here's the Toyota part# and a good price from a dealer in Michigan:

Baahhh. I hate it when I'm wrong. Sorry, deadtired.

The Yotatech writeup mentioned above has good pictures from Bob's 4Runner. However, your '99 might be like my '02... I didn't have to remove the glove box and cross piece. I just looked up in the passenger footwell area, and there was nothing in the way for removing my blower assembly. I removed 3 bolts and 1 electrical connector, and it slid right out.
 
I have a 97, and I didn't have to remove the glove box either. I just reached under there with a t-25 torx on a ratchet, after removing the kick panel (as said earlier) and had the blower out within 5 minutes. I blew off the dust with my air compressor, sprayed some white grease under the fan (I couldn't pull it off, even after removing the clip, but if you can, I'd stronly recommend it to oil it easier) and that was it. Took me like 15 minutes total. I don't know why Bob suggests you remove the glove box.

No more squealing.
