I Had To Sell My New 4runner, Seeing Double...

At night when i drove the 4runner, i was seeing doulbe vision at all the headlights, hell any light, at stop lights, it didn't matter what color was showing i saw that color light and same color light above it.. crazy. I just drove back to houston from colorado and it was the first time i really drove at night. Let me tell you all, it was pretty freaky on a two lane road with cars passing at 70 mph and seeing the lights like that.
I thought i was going insane. so i went to the toyota dealer to test a few other 4runners, thinking it was my windshield. NOPE,, i had the same problem with them all. it didn't matter if i had on my glasses or contacts. I did sit in a 02 without any problems though,,, i just don't understand it. Has anyone had this experience????

I will really miss this truck (at least in the daytime).

Have you talked to your eye doctor about it?

So many people (including yours truly) with eye glasses don't have any problem.

I just picked up a new set of glasses from my optomitrist and don't have any problem with either pair of glasses. Not very scientific or conclusive, but you may want to check your eyes first.
 
I traded my 98 montero in on it. I dont have any problems in other vehicles.. While at the dealership i sat in 6 other kinds of cars, trucks, suv's. only in the 4runner did i have this problem. I was lucky enough that they still had my MONTERO and i got that back. In that i can see clear as day. do halo's or double lights... i think it has to be the curve of the upper glass. because in the lower 6-8 inches on the 4runners windshield i could see fine. But i didn't pay all that money to squat down in my seat. It just really sucks to get rid of it. i loved having the v8, the towing capacity. etc...
 
That is certainly something I've never heard of. You make me want to go outside right now and sit in mine, just to see if I'll see double vision too.

Are you sure it's not only because you miss your Montero? :biggrin2:
 
While I've never read about problems this extreme, I have read a couple of complaints about the thicker, sound-reducing glass in the RX400h causing a bit of distortion.
 
I wear contacts and also my glasses sometimes and haven't had a problem driving the 4runner. I also don't drive it everynight as i bought it for my wife.
 
I don't know of anyone who has heard of this. i checked online to see about it with 4runners, and couldn't find anything. I really thought i was going crazy.
I may go look at a tundra, and you better believe i will also check out whatever i get at night before i leave the lot... I guess if they do something to the glass (hydrophillic) it could cause it. like i said it may just be the curve of the glass. I am curious so tonight i am going to check out a few cars that have a similar shape windshied. (low and curved ). I miss the smooth, powerful, quiet ride already. and to think i got better gas mileage in the v8 19.5-20.5 mpg actual hwy than the v6 montero 16.6 mpg if i was lucky. i will be checking out the 2007 when they come out for sure. maybe ill get lucky, and see straight... lol
 
Never heard of this problem, I certainly don't have it.
My wife and I took a trip this weekend, coming back home in the evening with a litte rain and no double vision.

I have had this problem a couplke times too. More when my eyes get tired. I don't have to wear any kind of corrective lenses or contacts either. Reading your post makes me think twice now about it....

Also a couple of questions for you

1) how tall are you

and

2) at what portion of the windshield are you looking through when this happens? (top 1/3rd, middle, lower, etc????)

For me I'm 6'-3" and looking through the top 1/3 of the windsheild. I wonder if the distortion is stronger in that area?

Also my water repellant is no longer working, so I don't think that is a factor.
 
i am 5'10, and i look through the top half of the window. it really is the truck,,, tonight a woman in my complex has an 04 limited, and i got to take a quick spin in it. AND I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM... oh well. i am stuck with my truck for a little longer.
 
Yes I have noticed that I see double images at night. It's not my eyesight as I have 20/20 vision and do not wear glasses. Also I do not see double images in my other Toyotas when driving at night. I noticed that if I lower my seat the double images are not visible so it must be a curvature in the glass distorting the images
 
This is the first I have heard of this. I drive at night almost every day and I never had a problem. I find the oncoming lights more annoying in a sedan.
 
I am 5'10" as well and I don't experience any problems. I guess its a moot point as of now, considering you don't own it anymore. Just thought I would contribute.
