Anyone added a sunroof to thier T4R?

Only thing my new 4Runner did not come with that I had wanted was a sunroof. Dealer mentioned in passing they could add one later if I wanted and it was not a big deal.

So, is a sunroof that they would install, the same sunroof it would get from the factory?

I have a Honda Accord that I transplanted the roof sub-structure and the molded sunroof opening that is formed into the roof itself, from a donor car I bought for parts. This design means that either a car is "built for a sunroof" or it's "not sunroof compatible" as the whole substructure of stringers under the roof, and the roof skin itself, are all formed differently between the two optioned cars.

So, I'm assuming now with modern assemblies, they made it more "unitized" where the body structure is made to either have the sunroof or not, but there was nothing different about the roof structure other than one had the hole cut and sunroof in it, the other has the spot for the hole and sunroof, but it just was not cut out/installed.

Is this about right?

And about how much was the total OTD cost to have the sunroof added?

Really considering this.......:D

You will definitely get a different roof than the one that comes from the factory (which may or may not be a good thing). The factory roof has had it's share of problems.

I'm not sure about any structural differences between the two roofs from the factory, but I would think roofs with the moonroof have some type of additional support system for the hole in the roof.

Thanks for the link. Those seem to be pretty well designed from what I can tell. It at least gives me a brand name to discuss with the dealership. There is a large outfit also, Regency Customs, about 20 minutes from my house. They do ALL the custom trucks/vans for many of the GM dealerships, and sunroof installation is one of their main operations. I might also give them a call and see what brand they use and prices.
 
My 4R didn't have a sunroof either...which was a bummer. But the dealer said he'd throw it in, and I couldn't be happier. It's actually bigger than the factory one . After almost 2 years: no problems, no leaks. Just make sure the installer is experienced!

OMG I love it. I see yours is a Hollandia too. Keep showing me pics like this and I'm liable to make an appointment sooner than later LOL.
 
my sister had an aftermarket sunroof put in as part of the deal when she got her car almost 5 years ago. the dealership sent it off to a shop in houston and 5 years later it still looks great and works like a charm with no problems at all. the factory windows have had problems, but nothing from the sunroof. i think they are getting a lot better at that kinda stuff. unless you actually knew better, you would not know it didn't come with one from the factory. the cover, the buttons, everything looks factory.

New Braunfels huh. I wanna go to Schiltterbahn again, went there about 5 years ago. man that place was fun!!!

But on topic, yeah the sunroof technology has come a long ways since the 70's/80's horror stories you hear about. My sister had a 78 Chevy shortbed fleetside, tan and brown, with a 350 small block, that my dad bought for her (back in the mid 80's) It had an aftermarket pop up sunroof on it, and that thing might as well been a mesh screen up there, because water leaked all around it. Good thing that truck got stolen and parted out somewhere, because it was fast becoming a rust bucket. Fast forward to modern vehicles and aftermarket sunroofs, and I have really yet to hear of any such problems occurring anymore. I'm not scared at all to have one installed, it's a fairly straightforward mod nowadays.

I'm not a big fan of after market sunroofs, but that looks great! Super nice looking install!
 
I'm curious if the aftermarket sunroofs can be fitted with the same speed-sensitive wind deflector as the factory sunroof
