Just thought it was kinda funny, my brother in law bought a really high dollar Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Edtion with QuadraDrive and Nav, etc, this bitch was LOADED. It's an 04 with the 4.7 V8 H.O.

My 2wd SR5, setting next to it, dwarfs his Jeep lol. I may not have all the options his does, but mine's cooler.

I have his Jeep right now, and he has my Ram, since they are moving and needed to use the truck. Wednesday night coming back from their house in his Jeep, I stopped by O'Screwme's to pick up some tail light bulbs for the Jeep, and seems the water pump decided that was all it was going to take, and blew the impeller shaft seal, looks to have been going out for some time now. So, at 80K miles, I put a water pump in it for him last night. It's had a set of brakes, and about 1100 bucks worth of other work not too long ago. And it's never really been off-road, MAYBE once in it's life. And it's an 04 model lol.

Makes me love my 4Runner that much more

Yikes, gotta love it..

Some guy at a car dealership once said..

"American cars have little problems here and there. They always have something break. Japanese cars are reliable, because when something goes wrong, its usually something big. But you have small problems with American cars that happen often."

It was funny, because we almost bought a Pontiac when he said this. He was trying to get us to splurge for the extended warranty. I find it true in a way. Usually, if something goes wrong with a Japanese car, it usually means its done. Sure, there are those little things we may nitpick, but its usually not something that prevents the car from running.
 
Haha, well, saga continues today. While on lunch break at work, I drove down to the Boston Market to get lunch, and while in the drive thru line, the transfer case, or something in the transmission, broke and stranded my ass AGAIN!!! Thank God I was only a half mile or so away from work. The selector to go from 4HI, N, and 4LO just flops back and forth, like it's not connected to anything. Park does not hold. And it goes nowhere in any gear now, and makes a gawd awful buzzing/grinding noise when you put it in park.

We got out the tow strap AGAIN, and towed it over to the local dodge dealership a couple miles from my house. We'll see what they have to say Monday when the look at it :confused: :awais:
 
But a Japanese car being done only happens in a blue moon. We had two Nissans, a Mazda and a Toyota. None of them gave us any problems. Three Toyotas currently, no trouble yet either.

The one Chevy (2000) we had, ended up being towed to the dealer cause it loss power steering, brakes along with everything else, stopped the pile from running a red by slamming the transmission into park. To the Chevy's credit, I thought the tranny was definately heading to "double A 'beep beep' M C O". :D The engine ran, but it was extremely dangerous to drive. Dealer said a line got pinched and had to be rerouted.

IMO, I rather have my car go dead and be done rather than lose some critical components and cause harm to not only myself but others around the pile that I'm in. Not to slam any domestics, but if my luck has it that it was just a fluke, I'm not taking chances when all the imports have served me just fine over its life. They only had little minor issues and everything was covered under warranty and no out of pocket expenses other than DIY maintenance, like a misaligned bumper (Mazda) or fried diff (Nissan) still managed to get off the freeway and pull over for a tow. Only got rid of them cause I wanted something new.
 
I'll have better data on Jeep reliability in the future. I haven't started collecting data on many Jeeps yet, but a number of the sample sizes are getting close. I'll have the first results for the 2007 Wrangler in a couple of weeks, but obviously those have few miles on them so far.

Overall, the repair rate for Toyotas seems to be one-third to one-half the repair rate for Chrysler products. I don't have results for any year of the 4Runner yet, but I have many FJ's signed up, and they seem to be extremely reliable.
