Driveshaft? Transmission? Joints? I have some noise please help

X-system Shock noise- I have some noise please help

I read up on all the clunk noise threads on the board. As well as the trasmission noise and im still not certain so i figured i should give it a shot and ask.

The problem i am having is a noise usually a thud/clunk. It can be heard usually from the drivers seat and even felt below my feet.
The noise occurs in different situations.

-From a complete stop when reaching approximately 5mph it can be felt and heard.
-When making a right turn. Not a full complete right turn. Id say at about a half turn of the wheel. When im at that certain point and apply gas the noise will be heard. Ive spun around in a parking lot turning at that degree and it only occurs when i give it gas.. even though i am going at different speeds.
-When i pass over rough terrain. By rough i mean any bumps in the pavement or going over a speed bump. When accelerating the noise is louder.
I was driving through some potholes the other day and turning and accelerating... and wow the clunk noise must have struck 3-5 times in a row.

2005 4runner with 51000 miles-
please any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I apologize for not being able identify the problem by reading prior posts.

We may be talking about two different noises. Most people experiencing the driveline clunk seem to be 4 wheel drive. That one is temporarily solved by greasing the driveshaft yoke at the trans as well as doing all the ujoint zirks. The other is in the steering near lock and you need to grease a contact point. Someone must remember this thread but I have forgotten where I saw it. This noise affects all the 4th gens I believe.
 
yeah i considered it being two diff noises. and have seen the thread you are referring to. the problem is.. is that its a consistant noise/thunk. and in the post you are referring to it happened with the steering wheel was at its max. when you are doing a u-turn or something. my noise just occurs during a half turn of the wheel.. and only when the car is given gas.

also the thunk described in the sticky thread. i know that thunk. we also own a 2005 tacoma v6 4x4. the noise everyone describes usually when letting the break go happens with that one.

the noise in my 05 4runner occurs in the situations i described.
to be more specific when i take off from a dead stop- i release the break i feel the car shift fine- gas is applied evenly.. i gain speed to about 5mph-8mph and then the thunk occurs.

its very strange and the fact that i hear it when i pass over things is weird also. when i go over a rough road- when accelerating the bumps cause the noise to be more frequent. i didnt think much of the noise till the other day when i heard it 3-5 in a row consecutively. it felt and sounded terrible. my guess is the suspension? or maybe one of my joints is bad?
 
It sounds that way to me too. I wouldn't let much grass grow before getting them both checked out as either one can be a safety issue. Sorry I couldn't be more help but without hearing this first hand I can't get much closer to the problem.
 
yeah i appreciate you trying to help out.
i will bring it by the dealership monday to see what they have to say about it.
 
Alright so i got it checked out at the stealership.

payed 147 for the diagnostic because apparently what they found wasnt covered by the power train warranty.

I was told the front left shock and back right shock are failing. The print out states that the x-system has failed and was explained to me that it was leaking or contaminated.

1600 for the new x-system that will be covered by the dealer ship.

1200 for labor

is it worth it? how can my suspension system fail already at 51k miles? seems pretty ridiculous. Shouldnt i be covered for such a failure?? 1200 labor how hard is it to replace it sheesh
any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
 
got the car back and have been driving it around for two days.

noise seems to be gone. i didnt get the work done to change the x-system?

was the dealer full of it? could they have some how disabled the system for temporary fix?
i dont know im confused but it seems to be gone? :confused:
 
If it only does it when you're applying the gas, just how hard are you hitting the throttle??? If you are stabbing the throttle, you may be actually breaking the tires loose and spinning them. Because of that, the traction control/dynamic stability control system is going to take over and cut throttle/apply brakes depending on the situation. When you hear the 'rattlesnake' under your feet, you will also sometimes hear a "clunk" right at the end of the relay cycling. I think that is the system releasing the brakes and allowing you to apply throttle again.

Listen more carefully to determine if the sound is from inside the vehicle or outside the vehicle, and consider what you're doing and what the vehicle may be trying to prevent you from doing.
 
no im not gunning the gas. just using it normally. it happened even when you slightly pressed it.

its been a while now and have added about 1200 miles so far the noise is gone.
