To begin with, this forum has been so helpful to me and I wanted to share how pleased I've been with my new tires. I hoping that my input can help others find thier tires. Merry X-mas!
I just changed my Sport 17's to limited 18's and I went through a lengthy search trying to find the smoothest, quietest, and best handling tires out there. After reading all the posts here, regarding everyones selection, I first selected the Yokohama Geolanders because I have had very positive experiences in the past and I felt that they compared favorably to the more expensive Michelins. However, one day into driving the Yokohamas, I was really unhappy. On new pavement, the ride was smooth and the handling seemed sufficient but once the road became uneven, the ride was jumpy and nervous. Even my stock Bridgestone 17's behaved better than these.
Needless to say, I renewed my search and came down to the Michelin Cross-Terrain SUV and Michelin LTX A/T2. I realize that each of these tires offer something a little different but because I do more highway driving than I do off-road or trail driving, I chose the Cross-Terrains.
In the end, I'm glad I listened to the feedback from various forums and sites on the Cross-Terrains because these are the best tires that I've had, period. I've had 4 4runners (3 generations) and never had a tire perform so well. The tires eliminate any deviation in the road, they turn on a dime and they reduced my cabin noise significantly. I know they aren't prepared to go hard in the mud but they ate the local trail up and I wasn't concerned a bit on loose hard ground. These tires performed effortllessly on the highway and on the trail. Well worth the extra 50 bucks per tires. I can't imagine how much better the ride could be if I upgraded my suspension.
This, obviously, is just my 2 cents and I hope that everyone looking for tires considers them because you won't be let down.
